Everyone needs a starter home, and for some that means the ideal bachelor pad. Whether it’s a small one-bedroom, an apartment meant for one or even a more spacious abode with barely any decor (hey — all that pizza drains the budget), it’s the perfect space to move into when you barely have any belongings. But, as time goes on and you decide to expand, your once quaint home can begin to feel pretty small. Just ask Mike Holmes Jr., whose bachelor pad upgrade is the subject of his show, Holmes and Holmes, with his pops Mike Holmes Sr. Here are just a few signs that it’s time for you to upgrade, too. You’re Eating Off the Floor
Sure, sure. Floor picnics can be cozy (and even romantic with the right setting), but is this really how you want to eat every single day? If there’s not enough room in your place to sit down and have a meal, you may want to consider moving to a place with more than one room.
This Is Your Dining Room Table
Sure, better than the floor, but this isn’t exactly a space that’s big enough to accommodate guests, either. So unless you never, ever plan on having people over to dinner, maybe t’s time to consider a bigger table.
You Own Any Walls That Are Painted This Colour
Stay away from cliche bachelor colours if you don’t want to be a cliche bachelor. That includes lime green, or a red-and-back, vampire inspired colour scheme.
Storage is Becoming an Issue
Do you find yourself getting creative with how you store things? If you’ve utilized every single inch of spare space — including the balcony — odds are it’s about time to upgrade your living situation.
You’ve Got Way Too Many Collectibles
Sure, this is a cool look for a man cave… but if this is what your entire house looks like and you plan on moving in with someone… well odds are you’re going to want to either purge the extra collectibles or else find a space that has a spare room for them.
Your Bedroom Is a Curtain
It was a great solution when you first got that condo, but now it’s beginning to feel a little cramped. And with good reason. Don’t you deserve a home with a real bedroom?
Your Futon Is Your Everything
Is it a couch or a bed? While this look may work in a basement (especially as a spare bed for guests), relying on a futon as your main couch and your bed is not only bad design, but it’s bad for your back, too. Isn’t it about time for an upgrade?
Barely-There Decor
Remember when you moved in and you had all of these grandiose paint dreams, but then you never got around to actually painting? Well, now may be the time, especially if you have someone moving in with you. After all, a little paint and a printed canvas are great ways to add dual personalities to a room.
Your Bed Takes Up the Entire Space
We love a luxurious bed, we really do. But if your entire apartment is your bed, well we sure hope all you ever do is sleep there.
Your Bed Barely Fits One
On the other hand, if you’re still sleeping in a dorm-mandated bed then you’ll definitely want to look into something a little bigger. One wrong toss during the night and suddenly you’d be on the floor with this mattress.
This Is Your Bathroom
Barely functional for one, this is a hard space to accommodate two or more people in. Can you imagine cramming in here to brush your teeth together? Us neither, so maybe it’s time to move on.
You’re No Longer Sure Which Room is Which
This space would be brilliant for a vacation, but it would feel less than functional as a full-time home. If you can no longer determine which room is which, you may just need to add more of them.
You’re Missing a Few Key Pieces of Furniture
This look may have totally been in when you were in your early twenties or at college, but as an adult you may want to consider adding a few essentials… like a table.
Your Entire Living Room is Set Up Around Your TV
We all love a good TV binge every now and then, but some of the best living room designs only incorporate a TV afterwards. If all your room has is a TV, perhaps it’s time to look at expanding.
Things Are Stacking Up
A guitar in the corner is cool. A guitar that’s about to be crushed by a zillion books or DVDs? Not so much. Invest in some adult-like storage solutions, pronto.
Your Surfboard is Your Main Decor
We get it, you like sporting. But if a bike and a surfboard are your only elements of decor, your space won’t exactly feel warm and welcoming. Avoid the locker room look with a few small upgrades, beginning with some paint and an actual spot to store your equipment.
