Before we got our hands on this space, Erin and Richard’s split-level ’70s home was dysfunctional and far from family-friendly. By removing the walls and installing wide-plank white oak floors, we achieved the airy, open concept layout Richard and Erin craved. And by keeping the fireplace where it originally was, we not only saved money, but maintained much needed breathing room between spaces and pockets of function. Outfitted with two-way glass, applied moulding for visual interest and pretty sconces, the fireplace became a show-stopping focal point to be enjoyed from any seat in the house! With ample storage, furniture the young family can grow into and a massive chef’s kitchen, this space went from cramped and confused to contemporary and comfortable.
