Tiffany Pratt’s DIY Planter Bag is Both Adorable and Affordable

Tiffany Pratt’s DIY Planter Bag is Both Adorable and Affordable

I love plants. I love bags. I love putting plants in bags. I love painting and I love painting the bags that the plants go in to match the room perfectly. Gone are the days that you have to fuss over trying to find the perfect ceramic pot. They can get really expensive and be a pain to manage. By putting a clear plant tray at the bottom of the bag you can have a perfect vessel for your plant that looks very relaxed yet still very chic!

I love using canvas bags for most anything because they are durable and come in a variety of sizes. They can be found at most hardware or craft stores and also online. You can even use the ones you already use for groceries and just paint on top! With only a few modifications to the bag, you can have the perfect “fabric pot” for your plants! Follow along and get inspired!

Here is what you will need for your DIY Plant Bag: canvas bags in the required sizes that you need to cover your plant pot, acrylic paint or fabric paint (use whatever you have!), paint brushes, a cup of water, safety pins, and scissors.

Step One: Paint your Bag

You get to start with the fun part first! Because canvas bags come flat this is the easiest way to get this bag painted because you can paint each side flat so the paint won’t drip.

Completely paint the bag front and back in the desired colours and patterns that you feel would match your space perfectly!

Note: You do not need to paint the handles as they are going to be cut off.

Step Two: Cut Off the Bag’s Handles

Cut the handles off your bag until there is only an inch of handle left so you can pin that down on the outside of the bag. Then you take the side seam and gather it together so that you create more of a round shape out of the bag. The bigger the bag, the bigger the gather.

Step Three: Add a Plate to the Bottom of the Bag

Find a plate that you have or something that you found at the dollar store to put at the bottom of the bag so that it helps keep the shape around your plant and when your plant goes inside there is something to catch leaking water. Now, put your plant in and enjoy!

Sometimes we overlook the simple things and complicate our lives by trying to find something that is just right. What I love to do is see what I have hanging around the house and see what I can make, so that I can create something that is just right. These plant pot covers are a great example! I love canvas bags! I love painting, I love plants! I have all of those things and by just looking around-I was able to fashion these great plant covers out of my canvas bag stock supply! Have fun with what you have! Look around! Add some paint to make it totally yours!
