This sleek blue bachelor pad is what happens when it’s time for your space to reflect where you are in your life. The team at Calgary’s DWK Interiors were tasked with creating an environment that would reflect the success of a well-travelled young professional. Armed with a $20,000 budget and the liberty to go wild, the resulting living area has style and flair that is every bit as unique as the custom suits worn by its owner.
Big Expectations
Located in Calgary’s Mission District, one of the city’s trendiest neighborhoods, the apartment’s interior naturally had to follow suit. Luckily, designer Jenn MacDonald of the DWK Interiors team was given free rein to work her magic and create something truly special.
Design Strategy
Since the apartment is about 1,000 square feet, every inch was thoughtfully designed to pack a punch.
Feeling Blue
The homeowner (a lawyer) is at the top of his professional game, so it was only fitting to incorporate a palette that’s just as powerful. After Jenn paired this bold area rug with two blue velvet armchairs, the room really started to take form.
Feature Items
Every stylish space requires a jaw-dropping showpiece or two. At nearly $1,600 per chair, these statement-making seats were a major splurge – but they ended up being the jumping-off point for the room’s beautifully bold aesthetic.
Metal Effect
After purchasing the blue armchairs and area rug, the rest of the design came together quite easily. Jenn knew she wanted to pair modern gold elements with mixed metals, and she avoided the use of light and airy colours to better suit the owner’s style preferences.
Recycle and Reuse
The designer didn’t have to hunt down a living room coffee table, since the owner’s existing one was already the perfect fit. Incorporating a few of the bachelor’s own pieces was easy, as his tastes already matched the design language of the new space.
Find Your Light
The condo’s 20-foot-high ceilings, along with the cool loft space located above the living area, fill the apartment with plenty of natural light. The extra brightness helps illuminate the rich colours throughout.
Make Them Say “Wow”
Since the owner wanted a suitable space to host business partners from his firm, it was essential for the living room to be welcoming and have wow factor (we’d say the design team totally delivered).
New Additions
The glass table, graphic artwork and modern light fixture are all new additions that help make the dining area the ideal spot for entertaining.
Light Show
The dining area used to host a builder-basic light fixture, so Jenn was quick to swap it for a funky metal chandelier with trendy clear bulbs.
Go for Gold
The living room’s gold accents are amplified thanks to the dining area’s statement wall art.
Small Touches, Big Impact
These ultra-sleek dining chairs paired with the table’s sculptural chrome legs keep this corner from ever feeling dull.
Call it Fate
As if this lamp wasn’t eye-catching enough, when the designers found out it was named “Tuxedo”, they knew it was destined to be included in the space.
Big Finish
From start to finish, it took just over eight weeks for this once basic apartment to transform into the modern dwelling it is today. It just goes to show how daring design decisions can result in major payoff.
