The View is Always Changing in This Rotating Beachfront Home in PEI

Located in northern Prince Edward Island, near the setting of the Anne of Green Gables novels, Around the Sea is a 5,000-square-foot masterpiece. It has four 625-square-foot condo rental suites, with the entire house rotating slowly throughout the day “to give every suite an ocean view!”

In 2009, Stephen and Stephanie Arnold purchased a plot of land in North Rustico, PEI, with plans of building a cottage. Inspired by a rotating home they saw on television, they decided to build their own.

According to the Around the Sea website, the home moves slowly, with one full rotation taking about 45 minutes. It also rotates as often as the controller wishes.

As one might expect, constructing a rotating home comes with its own unique set of challenges, ranging from supporting a 30-ton steel platform to coordinating electrical cables to accommodate the rotation. The rotation is driven by two 750-watt motors, each about the size of a washing machine. These motors are surprisingly energy efficient, utilizing about 60 per cent of the energy to power an air conditioner in a small home.

The interior is simple, although it’s a given that the real focus is the home’s ever-changing view.

Numerous windows and French doors allow guests to take full advantage of the varying views. And as a bonus: there’s also a pool table!

In addition to a king-sized bed in the master bedroom and a sofa-bed in the living room, a queen-sized Murphy bed folds out of a hidden wall cabinet next to the kitchen for even more sleeping accommodation.

After the home does one full rotation, it then does another full rotation in the other direction. The reason: to avoid twisting the power cables and plumbing.

When construction was completed, Around the Sea was Canada’s first rotating house.

“We’ve got two wraparound decks, one on the top floor, one on the bottom floor,” homeowner Stephen Arnold told The National Post.

“Imagine drawing your dream house on a napkin and making it happen!,” homeowner Stephanie Arnold told Saltscapes magazine. “You need to be passionate about what you are doing, so you can endure the tough times. And it helps when you are able to see a low hanging sun and an early moon from the same room at the same time of day.”
