Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. So, we’re here to remind you that you don’t need to spend a ton of money to show someone how much you care about them. After all, there are so many romantic gifts you can make yourself, like these DIY pressed flower candles. And if you want to give your sweetheart something extra special, skip the big box stores and opt for a creative handmade card instead. This year, use sand art to create a standout, one-of-a-kind Valentine your loved one is sure to fall head-over-heels for. Follow these easy steps to create your own.
Materials Required:
- Coloured sand (or white sand + food colouring)
- Cardstock
- Mod Podge
- Removable alphabet stickers (foam or removable vinyl)
- Weeding tool or tweezers
- Scissors
- Paint brush
Instructions:
Step One: Draw and cut out a heart from a sheet of cardstock. We went with a cheery pink cardstock in our version.
Step Two: Add removable alphabet stickers to spell out a Valentine message. We recommend going with a simple, short message, a la candy hearts. Test on a scrap piece of cardstock to ensure the stickers can easily and neatly peel off the paper.

Step Three: Using a small paintbrush, add Mod Podge onto the card around the letters. Don’t be heavy-handed with this step. A little Mod Podge goes a long way! Too much glue may make your cardstock soggy and harder to work with.
Step Four: Over the Mod Podge, sprinkle on some coloured sand. Press the sand down gently, and then shake off the excess. Repeat until the card is covered with sand. We recommend doing this step over a large piece of cardstock, paper or newspaper to keep things tidy.

Step Five: Gently peel off the stickers. You can use a weeding tool or a set of tweezers in this step to help peel back the corners.
Step Six: Give your Valentine to the lucky recipient!
