Jason and Hailey loved the idea of their 150-year-old farmhouse, that had been lived in by three previous generations of Jason’s family. But the actual old stone farmhouse? Not so much. The awkward layout, cramped kitchen, and lack of functional space made it challenging for their busy family of five. Enter Billy Pearson, Carolyn Wilbrink, and a $150,000 renovation budget to transform the untouched, time capsule into a marvelous and modern family home.

A Not-So-Fabulous First Impression
Justin and Hailey’s 150-year-old stone farmhouse looked pretty impressive from the outside. It sits on 100 acres of working farmland, with a 60-cow dairy farm. But inside, starting with the entryway, wasn’t much to write home about.
The foyer was tight, with a miniscule closet, and a broken window pane — a victim of “hockey alley” as the family put it. Three little kids playing with their hockey sticks had done some serious damage to the home, but Carolyn and Billy had big visions!
Seeing Green
To liven up the beautiful, original stone façade, Billy and Carolyn painted the front door a gorgeous teal green. It sets the tone for the entire home, and signals a welcome shift from being Jason’s parents’ and grandparents’ home, to being his new family home with Hailey and their children.
A Warm Welcome
Billy built a beautiful entryway cubby with a custom bench and storage for the young family.
The team also replaced the ugly old linoleum with beautiful wood floors throughout the entire main floor.
You can also see the original speckled limestone above the fireplace, that Billy and Carolyn chose to expose to add some depth and heritage to the family room.
A Time Capsule Kitchen
Next on Hailey and Jason’s reno wish list was the cramped kitchen, which required Billy and Carolyn to shimmy through!
The cramped and congested kitchen had forced the fridge into a hallway. The layout was completely impractical!
A Beautiful Bistro-Inspired Kitchen
The kitchen was completely transformed, and Hailey and Justin couldn’t believe their eyes.
Now, a massive island down the center of the room creates function and flow. A large fridge was conveniently placed between the counter and cabinetry, and beautiful old beams add a charming, homey touch.
Everyone Gets a Seat at the Table
A gorgeous banquette is a great solution for a comfortable dining area where floor space is tight. Carolyn layered it with plush pillows in beautiful prints to create an inviting dining area. Hailey knew the kids would be thrilled to pile in together!
Two is Better Than One
The original farmhouse had a single bathroom, so creating a powder room was essential for the young family of five. Billy and Carolyn were able to create a bathroom on the first floor by reconfiguring space from the original laundry room.
Hailey was overjoyed to have a main floor bathroom, not only for her young kids, but guests as well! And the charming, colourful wallpaper was just the icing on the cake!

A Pretty Chill Bathroom
The second floor bathroom was in desperate need of a makeover! Despite the spacious room, the toilet and sink were awkwardly cramped in a corner, and the bathtub was tiny!
Carolyn was quick to point out the potential though. The bathroom had an incredible original window, and a large wall of unnecessary storage, allowing space to add a large glass shower.
A Bathroom That Was Meant to Be
By taking advantage of the spacious bathroom, Carolyn was able to give Hailey and Justin everything they needed to make it functional with three young kids. Two sinks, so kids don’t have to climb over each other to spit out their toothpaste, a bathtub big enough to fit all three, and a gorgeous glass walk-in shower.
The Bigger, Better Bathroom
And there’s that gorgeous green again, from the front door!
Carolyn relied on a few punches of colour throughout this renovation, to add charm and ensure the home felt family friendly. This green looks beautiful paired with touches of gold and the matte black hardware.
