Like everything in your home, your mattress requires maintenance and cleaning over time. Ignore it and your sleep will suffer. (And who needs that?)
For starters, protective layers will keep your mattress cleaner longer. You can wash stains out of mattress covers and pads in most washers and dryers, but washing a stain out of a mattress is much harder. Protective layers will also act as barriers against moisture, dust and dirt. They’re great for sweaty sleepers (ahem) and certain covers even protect against bedbugs!
You’ll want to act fast when it comes to treating spills and stains. (You can do your best to avoid them with a “no food or drinks” rule in the bedroom.) When a spill occurs, blot it dry quickly. Then follow up with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda on a damp cloth. Remember, you don’t want to soak your mattress further, so be sure to wring out your cloth before treating the stain.
General maintenance of a mattress is fairly simple, but most forget to do it. Mattresses should be flipped and spun twice a year to keep them from sagging. Do it on the beginning and end of Daylight Savings as an easy way to remember!
