These DIY mini macrame plant hanger ornaments are the perfect way for plant parents to celebrate their love of plants with their holiday decor. They would also make a great gift for a friend – just fill the pot with soil and tuck a cutting from one of your plants inside. Follow these steps to make your own.
Materials Required:
- Mini terracotta pots – 3 inches (pictured) or smaller
- Matching saucers (optional)
- Acrylic paint and paintbrushes (optional)
- Butcher’s twine or DK weight yarn
- Sharp scissors
- Tape
- Keyring
- Plant cuttings
Step One: Paint Your Pots (Optional)
Plain terracotta is beautiful, but if you want to really customize your ornaments, use a little acrylic paint and a fine brush to paint on a holiday motif or geometric pattern. White dots are super easy – just dip the tip of the brush handle into the paint and use it to stamp the dots onto the terracotta.
Step Two: Measure and Cut Lengths of Twine
To get started, you’ll need to decide whether to make a three-legged or four-legged macrame hanger. For a three-legged plant hanger, you’ll need six lengths of cord. If you’ll want to make a four-egged one, you’ll need eight. Measure out either three or four lengths of butcher’s twine, each approximately 18 inches long. Cut two smaller lengths, about siz inches long each, and set them aside.
Step Three: Attach Cord to the Key Ring
Next, hold the long pieces of cord together. Fold them in half and thread them through the key ring until the keyring sits at that halfway point. Hold all the cords together like a ponytail. Using a shorter piece of cord, make a loop and lay it flat facing towards you against the bunch of cords. Wind the tail of the shorter piece of cord around the rest to secure it to the key ring.
Step Four: Divide Cords into Groups
However many cords you have, divide them into groups of four. Each of these groups will become one leg of your macrame plant hanger. Starting with one group of four cords, tape the two centre cords to your work surface and hold one of each of the outer cords in each hand.
Step Five: Tie Square Knots
To tie a square knot, take the cord in your left hand and lay it horizontally over the centre cords. Then take the cord in your right hand and run it over the left cord, under the middle cords, and up through the loop on the left. Pull tight. Repeat this process with the right cord on top. Once you’ve tied one square knot, repeat with each of the other legs.
When you’ve finished with the first set of knots, take the rightmost cord of one set of cords and the leftmost of the set immediately to its right. Those become your new centre cords. Repeat the process for a second round of square knots an inch or two below the first.
Step Six: Secure the Tails and Trim
Using the same knot as we used to secure the cords to the keyring, bunch the tails together and secure them an inch or two below the last round of square knots. Trim the tails to your desired length.
Step Seven: Pot Up Cuttings and Hang Ornaments
Finally, fill your pots with soil, take cuttings from your happiest plants, and pot them up. Your ornaments are ready to gift or hang on your tree!
