1:10

Welcome back to Paint School, where we’ll show you many easy, affordable DIY paint ideas to refresh your space. Today’s lesson: Learn how to transform and upcycle your bedroom furniture with items you currently have at home. It only takes a little stain and paint to transform your bedroom into a modern sanctuary.

Let’s get started!

Materials:

  • BEHR® Water-Based Stain & Poly in One in Espresso (Satin Finish)
  • BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Interior Paint & Primer in Pond’s Edge S410-3 (Eggshell Finish)
  • Paint brushes
  • Mini paint roller kit
  • 150-220 grit sandpaper
  • Orbital sander
  • Cloth
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Drop cloth
  • Screwdriver

Step 1: Prep Your Bed Frame and Furniture

Start your bed transformation by removing your mattress and prepping your workspace and floors using a drop cloth and painter’s tape.

I’ll use an orbital sander for the first step, so be prepared for dust!

Remember to sand all parts of the bed frame you intend to stain. If it has stripped, unstained or raw wood, use 150-220 grit sandpaper until smooth. If you have previously finished wood that isn’t being stripped, you can lightly sand with 400-grit sandpaper to help with adhesion.

Tip: Don’t forget to remove the dust with a clean cloth after you’re done.

Step 2: Refresh the Look of Your Bed Frame With Stain

I love BEHR Water-Based Stain & Poly in One because of the quality and coverage of the finish – it’s perfect for this project. I’ll be using a beautiful dark tone, Espresso, to deliver rich colour and protection in one easy step.

First, use a high-quality nylon/polyester bristle brush to apply a very thin, even first coat of wood stain by following the direction of the grain. It helps to hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to help minimize brush marks and bubbles.

Then, let the first coat dry for 1one hour or more. Once it’s dry, lightly sand with fine sandpaper (up to 400 grit) and apply a second thin coat of wood stain. Apply a third coat if you would like to achieve a deeper tone.

Let it dry for one more hour, and in the meantime, work on upcycling your side tables.

Step 3: Add a Pop of Colour to Your Side Tables With Paint

I picked these beautiful side tables, and of course, I need to add a pop of colour using BEHR PREMIUM PLUS Interior Paint & Primer. It’s my favourite paint because of the excellent coverage (it hides so much!) and it’s so easy to apply. I decided to use Pond’s Edge, a lovely modern colour in a soothing green tone, perfect for bedroom accessories.

Lightly sand the side tables with 150-200 sandpaper. Similar to the bedframe, remove the dust with a cloth before painting.

Apply your first coat with a nylon/polyester brush or a mini paint roller and let it dry. After two hours, apply a second and final coat.

Step 4: Updating the Side Table Hardware

Lastly, I switched the drawer hardware with these adorable brass pulls for a more modern and elevated look. I really think they complete the bedroom refresh. Swapping out the hardware is a simple way to refresh the look of your bedside tables.

And that’s it! Can you believe how simple it is to upcycle wood furniture with BEHR stain and paint? I’m in love with my new bedroom and can’t wait to see you in the next episode of Paint School!
