Step 1: Prep the Fabric
First, start by cutting a piece of monk’s cloth that will fit into the embroidery hoop selected for the project. Secure the hoop by stretching the fabric to make sure it is even — this is key to punch needling.
Using a marker, draw your design grid on the canvas where you will be punching the yarn next.

Step 2: Thread the Punch Needle
Now let’s thread the needle using the metal threader through the end of the needle punch. Thread the yarn and push the threader to the other end of the punch needle.
Insert the metal threader through the eye in the tip of the needle and remove the threader, leaving just the yarn ready to punch.
Step 3: Punch the First Colour
Start punching in one corner of your fabric — punch the needle through, then pull the yarn back out leaving it on the opposite side. Have fun and continue punching until you’ve filled the square with the chosen colour. Leave one square empty to create the checkered effect with the next chosen colour.

Step 4: Punch the Second Colour
After you finish punching the first colour in all the squares, thread the second colour into the punch needle and repeat the same process (starting from the corners). Once your checkerboard pattern is complete, you can trim any excess yarn on both sides using your scissors.
Remove the design from the hoop carefully. Then, to make your coasters more durable, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the back. You can glue a piece of fabric to cover it, so it’s not sticky. Trim any excess yarn from the edges and voila — you’ve just learned how to DIY punch needle coasters all by yourself. High-five!
