If you have followed my DIY adventures over the years, you know how much I love to try new art mediums and techniques, especially when it’s a colourful project. As we’ve seen on social media, the tiling furniture trend is here to stay, with the movement taking over every surface possible: think floors, walls and much more. I embarked on the tile-mania trend and decided to upcycle my vintage workshop table that needed lots of love. This DIY is one of my favourite upcycles to date and I’m sure it’ll be the same for you. Here’s how to tile a table, make colourful grout and all of the materials you’ll need to enter your very own tile-mania heaven.

Step 1: Prep Your Table

Start by cleaning any dust or dirt off the piece you will use with a dry cloth. For a tabletop, you will need to calculate the dimensions and the grout space you’ll require. We think 2 x 2 inch tiles are great for standard-sized furniture.

Step 2: Glue the Tiles Down

There are many different types of tile adhesive, but for this particular project I had a large amount of silicone leftover from my home renovation, so we decided to upcycle it as the glue. If you choose this type of adhesive, just make sure you have a caulking gun for easy application.

Right after you apply the adhesive, lay out the tile sheets and adjust them to even out the grout spacing around your table.

Important tip: Let the tiles set for 24 hours before you begin grouting.

Step 3: Making Colourful Grout

Making colourful grout is a fun and simple process — you’ll just need a pre-mixed grout and some acrylic paint mixed in a plastic container. Add as much paint as you’d like to achieve your desired tone and start stirring it quickly until the colour has been combined evenly throughout the grout mix.

.. and yes, it’s as simple as that!

Step 4: Working on the Grout

With your colourful grout mix in hand, grab a plastic scraper and apply the grout on top of your tiled table. The key here? Make sure the grout is applied everywhere and fills the spaces evenly, going all over in all directions (including the edges along your table).

Because I love a good challenge, this table will have grout in two different colours: blue for the top and pink for the edges.

Step 5: Removing Excess Grout

After adding all of the grout to your table, use a bucket filled with water and a big sponge to remove the excess grout. Tip: Do not wait too long to clean the excess — the longer you wait, the harder it will be to do it. This is a fast step!

I highly recommend using gloves during the grouting process, to avoid any unnecessary mess.

Now, let your table sit for 24 more hours and then clean it with a wet cloth once it has dried completely.
