Step 1: Drawing Your Designs

Start by cleaning the terracotta pots with a dry cloth to remove any dust. Then, with a pencil, draw different patterns that you will later paint. You can decide whether to do fun abstract patterns or more traditional designs. Below are three patterns to get you started!

Pattern Idea #1: Thick Stripes

Decide on the width of your stripes and then paint them with three varying acrylic paint colours. The fun part? You can alternate the colours on the base of your planter and then paint the rim using inverted striped colours to really make a statement.

Now, let the first coat dry and once it’s dry, add any touch ups as needed.

Pattern Idea #2: Scalloped Edges

Using a pencil and anything in a round shape (a coin, a bottle cap, etc.) you can easily sketch half moon-shaped scallops around the bottom or rim of the planter.

Then, with a small paint brush, carefully paint the scallops and let them dry completely.

Pattern Idea #3: Abstract Wavy Lines

Lightly draw abstract wavy lines around the entire pot – you can choose if you paint the rim or not. These lines look best when they are freeform, creating a dynamic and fun look.

We selected the same colours and painted three wavy lines using a fine paintbrush.

Pro Tips:

  • You can add a finishing touch of sealant if you use your planters outdoors. Preferably, pick a clear finish to protect the paint.
  • Don’t be scared to experiment with mixing acrylic paint colours to create custom shades that match your personal aesthetic and existing home decor.
  • Allow each colour to dry to touch before adding the next one to avoid mixing and drips.

We can’t wait to see how your dollar store planters turn out. Happy crafting, everyone!
