Step 1: Prep the Wall for Anchors

First things first, you’ll want to decide how high you want the headboard to sit. For this project, the anchors were placed 26 inches above the mattress surface, which gave enough height to the headboard to see above the pillows. Grab your measuring tape and mark the spots where the anchors will go. The seat cushions I’m using are 20 inches wide, so I spaced the anchors 60 inches apart. Ensure they’re evenly spaced and level on both sides of the bed.

Step 2: Install the Metal Wall Anchors

With your marks made, it’s time to install your wall anchors. Hold your metal wall anchors against your marks and tap them in half-way with a hammer. Then use a screwdriver to twist them in until they sit flush with the wall. Metal wall anchors will provide strong support for the curtain rod holders and the headboard.

Step 3: Attach the Leather Curtain Rod Holders

Take your leather curtain rod holders and fold them so that the holes align perfectly. Make sure that your seam is facing the wall and align the holes in the leather with your wall anchor. Use screws to attach the leather straps to the wall anchors. These straps will hold the wooden dowel in place, so make sure they’re fastened tightly.

Step 4: Insert the Wooden Dowel

Next up, slide the 1-inch wooden dowel through the leather straps. Measure the dowel and use a saw to trim it to size. For this queen-sized bed, I cut my dowel to 67 inches. If you don’t have a saw, this can easily be done at the hardware store. Make sure to measure your space ahead of time to ensure you get the dowel cut to the correct size for your bed. Once cut, slide the dowel through both curtain rod holders, ensuring it’s evenly centered above the bed.

Step 5: Tie on the Seat Cushions

Here’s where the coziness comes in! Take your four seat cushions (make sure they have ties on them) and start attaching them to the wooden dowel. Space them evenly across the dowel, making sure they’re tied securely so they won’t slip or sag. The cushions will act as a soft, comfy headboard and add a pop of colour and texture to the space. You can get creative here and choose cushions that match your room decor.
