When Robin and Luis’s daughter Eva was two, she was diagnosed with hearing problems that led to a speech impediment. Years later, the couple still banks plenty of hours helping Eva study to better her speech, especially Luis. So Robin wanted to do something nice for her husband and create a family space where everyone could hang out, study or play in. She called in Cheryl Torrenueva and Roger Morin of Reno Set Go to help surprise her husband with a brand new design. Here’s the fun new family room they came up with.
A Space for Adulting
This little nook is the perfect spot for the adults to chill while Eva plays or studies. The love seat is great for two, but the addition of patterned stools means anyone can pull up a seat. Soft, neutral colours add a modern vibe while the blue from the area rug adds depth and warms up the space.
Bursts of Colour
The brilliant yellow on these side tables adds a fun burst of colour to the room and helps make the space feel larger than it is. Meanwhile the drawers below add extra storage for remotes, books, magazines and any other knickknacks.
A Modern Coffee Table
We love the geometric shape of this modern coffee table, which adds real statement to the room. The silvery finish is a perfect compliment to the soft walls and rug below, and the serving tray atop of the piece adds that extra layer of designer appeal.
Mix and Match
The furniture may be adult, but the throw pillows add some fun inspiration that ties this living room area into the kid-friendly space across the way. A few pom-poms on the pillows combined with funky and colourful patterns are an easy (and interchangeable) win.
Simple Patterns
These curtains boast a simple but elegant design that ties into the greys and silvers featured elsewhere in the room. Anything busier would have perhaps closed in the space, but these help to make it feel open and airy.
New Flooring
The wood finish on these faux floors makes the space feel polished and clean, especially with the oversized baseboard and trim. The planks run the length of the room, helping to draw the eye, elongate the space and make it feel nice and large.
A Studious Space
Because this couple’s daughter needs to work at her speech therapy in order to improve, Luis has been banking long hours studying with her. So Cheryl and co. crafted this sturdy little study desk that’s perfect for two, creating a little “office” area within the larger family space.
Matching Chairs
These antique chairs underwent a personal touch thanks to a little paint and some stencils. Now Dad and Eva both have their own spot to study and work on Eva’s speech. As a bonus, there’s lots of storage underneath to help keep the area neat and tidy, and a fun little light box above allows dad and daughter to display inspiring messages each day.
Custom Art
Cheryl crafted these nifty posters out of a memory game, putting a fun spin on a classic. The only real pattern here was to keep it fun, and we’d say that goal was definitely achieved.
A Child-Friendly Space
On the other side of the room Roger crafted this customized loft area for Eva to play, read and generally hang out in. With its bunk and colourful decorations this is the kind of space we’d imagine any kid would love to call their own.
A Bird’s Eye View
Above, the loft features lots of plush textiles and a custom foam mattress so that Eva can hang out in maximum comfort. Sturdy rails make the area completely safe, and give the kid a nice view of the rest of the living space.
A Little Nook
Underneath the loft Cheryl added a sturdy storage area for all of Eva’s toys in a soft wood that warms up the space and compliments the flooring. A wicker basket to hold extra pillows and a plush, colourful rug add extra play space, while indoor string lights give a whimsical feel to the area. Some framed art and a customized, light-up “E” sign complete the look. Now this is what we’d call the ultimate surprise, both for dad and daughter.
