After eight years in office, it’s time for the President and First Lady to pack their bags and take up residence in a new eight-bedroom, 8,200-square-foot abode. Located in the prestigious Washington, D.C., neighbourhood of Kalorama, this expansive home carries a $4.3-million price tag and a rich history. We have no doubt the Obamas will feel right at home here. By Brent Furdyk
After the White House
When the Obamas exit the White House on Jan. 20, they’ll move into this historic eight-bedroom home, which the 44th president will lease. The Obamas are reportedly planning to spend the next two years in this house until youngest daughter Sasha finishes high school and, presumably, the couple will find themselves empty nesters.
Formal Entrance
The front foyer is welcoming and warm, with inviting white walls and Parisian-inspired black-and-white checkered flooring.
Traditional Living
Light grey walls, a large mantled fireplace and generous mouldings throughout are just some of the features of this living room where the Obamas will likely spend time resting, relaxing and entertaining family, friends, foreign dignitaries and celebrities (because you KNOW Beyonce and Jay Z will be dropping by).
Another View
Another view of the living room, displaying the gorgeous French doors leading to the expansive back yard.
Delightful Den
Wall-to-wall carpeting can be passé, but not in this den located in the basement of the home. The dark stairway railing and furniture are a nice contrast to the white carpeted floors – and great place for the 44th Commander in Chief to put his feet up and watch his beloved White Sox.
Sitting Area
Double French doors open to the backyard and provide extra light along via large windows in the adjacent wall. Who wouldn’t want to curl up with a good book on that gorgeous, low-profile couch that stretches across the room?
Room for Relaxing
Former Presidents Gerald Ford and Woodrow Wilson both retired in the Kalorama neighbourhood area and Hillary Clinton reportedly owns a home nearby. A home in such a politically inclined neighbourhood should have a comfy bright room like this one, with wall-to-ceiling windows and a brick-lined fireplace creating the idea setting for some neighbourly political chit-chat.
Renovated Kitchen
The brick Tudor-style mansion was built in 1928 and has methodically been renovated, as this kitchen design clearly shows. The clean, bright room is spacious and open, and it’s easy to picture the family gathering around this cozy table to enjoy their morning OJ.
White House Similarities
The home has been described as having a similar setup as the White House. Given the gorgeous look of the kitchen, who needs 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue? Lovely wood floors set horizontally instead of vertically, marble countertops, and a six-burner stove just out of view, make for an excellent place to cook a stately meal.
Butler’s Pantry
More large living is on display in this pantry that’s the size of the average home’s entire kitchen. We’re still loving all the marble, which nicely bleeds into the white subway tiles that line both sides of the space, including the side of the stairway that leads to an upstairs hall. The built-in shelving for all of the Obama family cookbooks is an added bonus, along with more cabinets to provide additional storage.
Esthetically Pleasing
Pictured here is one of the family’s eight bedroom, with this one boasting its own wood-burning fireplace and large windows flooding the room with outdoor light.
Spotless Bathroom
There are not many bathrooms in the world sparkling enough where you feel sufficiently comfortable to throw down a few blankets and sleep on the floor, but this is one of them. This room offers wall-to-wall Statuario marble counters and tiles, with a large soaker tub and walk-in shower.
What a View!
Close to first-rate golf courses and various other world-class amenities, the property is owned by Joseph Lockhart, who acted as the White House Press Secretary during the administration of former U.S. President Bill Clinton. Clearly he is a man who enjoyed outdoor entertaining, as this terrace with formal gardens and a courtyard is spacious and shaded – perfect for Washington garden parties.
