Tidying up the bathroom is on most people’s to-do list. And no wonder – no matter what you do, it feels like it’s forever filling up with stuff. Trying thinking beyond your medicine cabinet with clever storage solutions. From an antique cabinet to a simple step ladder, there are so many ways to store and organize your toiletries with style.
Creative Shelving for Stashing
Think outside of the closed cabinet. Keep toiletries stashed in pretty boxes and unusual places, such as a corner shelf or a painted antique chair. As an aside, this wainscotted bathroom has a delightful nostalgic appeal and a cheery vibe thanks to the doses of colour.
A Rustic Idea
For a homespun look, pop a bunch of ear swabs and cotton balls into Mason jars. To really get that rustic feel, add in a repurposed wood shelf (eco alert) and you’re good to go. Plus, clear containers mean never having to wonder where you’ve hidden your toiletries.
Choose Uniformity
Uniformity is visually pleasing. If you don’t like removing your toiletries from the packaging, hide them away in matching boxes. A textural option such as rattan is a nice choice to warm up a bathroom. Follow the Marie Kondo method for storing towels (one colour only please!). Meanwhile, a wire basket makes a perfect, countrified vessel for toilet paper.
Antiques in the Loo
Dining rooms and living rooms can’t have all the fun – an antique cabinet is gorgeous in a bathroom. It brings a certain elegance and so much room for toiletries!
Get Artistic
Treat that over-the-toilet shelving unit like the ones in your living room: layer in artwork and a candle or two. There’s still more than enough room for bathroom essentials. When choosing a freestanding unit, like this one from Overstock, go for something a little special instead of utilitarian.
Hide and Seek
Baskets, shelves, boxes – there are so many spots to corral away the bits and keep only the nicely packaged pieces out in the open.
On the Wall
Baskets abound, from the large lidded variety you keep on the floor, to the ones you can hang. The mounted variety, like these from Pottery Barn, are excellent helpers in a space-starved bathroom.
Shelf Life
If you’ve got the option to do so, why not top your vanity with a shelving unit in the same finish? Or incorporate it into the design if you’re renovating? A stainless steel rack over the toilet is always a great – and under-used spot – to hang extra towels.

Nice Niche
Sarah Richardson does it again. Simple pegs for the towels, inset shelves for the toiletries – all coordinating, naturally.
Think Vertical
The slimmest space can be a powerhouse of storage: just count these stashing spots. There’s an open shelving unit, hidden under-counter space, pegs for towels, a medicine cabinet and wall-mounted fabric baskets. That’s FIVE different areas! Thanks IKEA.
Step Right Up
Ladders – big or small, in a bathroom or a living room – are a simple way to display and store your toiletries. Don’t forget to add in a basket or two! And let’s give a shout out to that watery ombre shiplap wall. So fitting in a bathroom.
Narrow Escape
When there’s no room in a bathroom, a sliver of a shelf works in a pinch – top it with anything you’d like, from lotions to pretty flowers in clear vessels.
Bunches of Beauties
There’s just something about a tidy cupboard that’s calming. This one comes together with everyday components: clear cookie jars, lazy susans and wire baskets. The key is to group similar items together.
