Does the hustle and hectic bustle of urban living have you yearning to get out of the city? From rustic homes nestled in the countryside to historical barns transformed into barn-style houses and bonus spaces, we love the classic country vibes of barn houses. To fuel our modern barn house dreams, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite country charmers.
A Rustic Home on the Range
With a little care and attention, a rustic barn house can be made modern while keeping all the character of the country – as this homeowner showed with this jaw-dropping barn conversion. Originally a ramshackle barn behind a country farmhouse, the structure was renovated into a comfortable, cozy apartment. Outside, original features like the red barn-board exterior were refinished, while practical additions (like the windows) made the barn feel like home.

Big Red Barn Style
If your property has a barn but you don’t farm, it can be an incredible opportunity for adding extra functional space to your homestead. Take this iconic red barn that Randy Spracklin and the Rock Solid Builds team transformed: the century-old Newfoundland barn had plenty of history, but wasn’t being used. By repairing and refinishing the structure, it became an amazing addition to the property.

Inside, Randy and the team converted the barn into living and entertaining space with a lower-level dining area, custom floor-to-ceiling shelving and a stunning sleeping loft. To maintain the country character, the team kept as many original finishes as possible. Love the country look? Here are Sarah Baeumler’s surprising tips for how to use rustic finishes the right way.
Living With Livestock
As much as we love a well-outfitted, petite patio in the city, one of the perks of country life is that there’s way more outdoor space to live in. In this Backyard Builds design, for example, Brian McCourt and Sarah Keenleyside took advantage of a couple’s recent move out to the country to create a series of rustic – and practical – structures in the yard. Here, the old country garage was transformed into a dreamy indoor entertaining space, while an old shed became a functional chicken coop for raising livestock.
