Canada’s style is wonderfully multifaceted – here a rustic rough-hewn log bench, there a sleek contemporary floor lamp – so it’s only natural that our decor stores follow suit. Here, from coast to coast, are 25 of the best with something for everyone, no matter your design style or budget.
EQ3
Founded in Winnipeg in 2001, EQ3 makes contemporary Canadian-made furniture accessible. Its resolutely modern products somehow work in every environment. The brand also isn’t afraid to share the spotlight, as seen in the EQ3+ line that features iconic European tastemakers like Alessi. We love how many of the pieces, including the clean-lined sofas, can be customized through materials and finishes.
Stylegarage
Toronto’s Stylegarage has been offering custom furniture manufactured in the GTA for over 17 years (long-time fans will remember it started out as Gus* Modern). It’s now a two-storey showroom on the city’s buzzy Ossington strip. The aesthetic here is mid-century modern, which is expressed in a range of products, from sophisticated velvet sofas to cool task lighting. It’s a smart source for sleek outdoor furniture too.
Simons
is technically a department store (founded in Quebec in 1840) but we have a soft spot for its furnishings, particularly the bedding. We’re not the only ones. Le Germain Hotels liked it so much, they partnered with the brand to create a signature Egyptian cotton bedding collection.
The Cross Decor & Design
This beloved Vancouver style destination is the handiwork of founders Darci Ilich and Stephanie Vogler. More creative directors than retailers, they’ve curated a store that feels like home, from comfy slipcovered furniture down to smaller details like a feathery pillow or a string of wooden beads. Perk: they also offer interior design services.
BRIKA
With three Toronto locations and an online shop, BRIKA makes shopping for crafts easy. Find hand-crafted works from hundreds of North American designers, artisans and makers. Consider it your new go-to gift destination.
Cottage Industry
Come to this locally-owned Charlottetown, PEI, treasure for laid-back furniture and accessories with a coastal cool vibe. The small shop is packed with seaside-chic delights and also offers custom design services. Even better? Out-of-towners can shop the collection online.
The Art Shoppe
This Toronto institution has been offering the discerning shopper high-end design since 1936. At 70,000 square feet, it’s a joy to get lost in. The store feels more like a gallery thanks to the artful vignettes arranged to look like living areas (imagine IKEA with a budget on steroids). Shop here for forever-items worth investing in.
Elte
Derived from founder Léon Tenenbaum’s initials (LT), Elte is family-run business that began in Paris in 1919, moved to Toronto in 1944 and continues to expand its offerings. More importantly, its warehouse is design nirvana: furniture and accessories for every room and a roster of designers. If price tags are too steep, check out Elte MKT, its affordable off-shoot that debuted in 2015.
Hudson’s Bay
While we’ll never get enough of Hudson’s Bay point blankets, there’s more to this department store than classics. Furniture and accessories abound, and we keep returning for the dishware. There’s china we love to style casually (Royal Doulton and hot dogs, anyone?) and spot-on casual dishware: zingy colours, contemporary shapes and fab finishes.
Tonic Living
A not-so-secret source for designers, this Toronto shop is fabric heaven and open to the public. It began in 2003 and offers a lively selection of fabrics, as well as expert sewing services. The hands-on team consults on custom drapery, cushions and more.
F2 Furnishings
This concept store was established in 2004 in Edmonton and has since expanded to Calgary. All of the furniture is Canadian made, but more importantly, it rocks. There are pieces for every room, all designed with form and function in mind. This walnut bed is on our wish-list: it’s timeless and looks so wonderfully Canadian.
Old Faithful Shop
Vancouver’s historic Gastown is an apropos setting for this charming housewares shop. Inspired by original general stores, it’s a treasure trove of eclectic items that calibrate classic design with a contemporary vibe. It’s the kind of place you can pop into for a kitchen brush and walk out with a quirky fragrance (like Burning Barbershop). Good news: you can also shop online.
Mjölk
can make a minimalist out of anyone. Located in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood (with products also available online), this serene store specializes in simplicity. It’s both a shop and gallery, featuring work by Japanese and Scandinavian artists. We’re hooked on its tableware, especially the teacups by designer Oji Masanori pictured here.
Peridot Decorative Homewear
Gracefully glam and wonderfully luxurious, this store in Fort Langley, BC specializes in elegant home decor and also offers design services. The mix is just right, from colourful artwork and mirrored furniture to dramatic chandeliers.
Artemano
If you’re looking for wood furniture and decor, this is the place for you. Teak, rosewood and mango wood are just some of the specialties on offer. Artemano‘s tailored style appeals to both traditional and contemporary tastes alike.
Crocus & Ivy
The beautiful displays inside this Regina-based homewares store are hard to resist. The expert edit offers everything from exclusive rugs, pillows and throws to adorable children’s toys, botanical skincare and even women’s fashion.
MADE Design
Whether you shop online or at the Toronto location, this is the source for Canadian homewares made by independent designers. The edit is constantly evolving with new must-haves, such as these gorgeous hand-thrown carved vases by Toronto maker Liz Eeuwes.
Maison Corbeil
This is Quebec’s headquarters for contemporary furniture, with three locations across the province. Come here for sleek sectionals, directional accessories and modern pieces by iconic designers, such as Ligne Roset and Cattelan Italia.
Nineteen Ten Home
This Vancouver boutique delights with an assortment of beautifully crafted household and gift items. It stocks goods from around the globe, but we love that Canadian-made wares are always in the edit and the focus is on independent producers. You can also shop its collection online.
Far + Wide Collective
Shop well and do good could be the mantra for this online store. It features only handmade, artisanal products from emerging economies, and the homewares are stunning – we especially love the above pictured storage baskets that were handwoven by artisans in Mexico.
Black Rooster Decor
The design finds at Black Rooster Decor (which can also be scooped up online) are always hard to resist. Inspired displays showcase all this eclectic Toronto showroom has to offer, from whimsical tabletop accessories to dramatic mirrors and furniture for indoors and out. Shopping here feels like you’re in an upscale European market.
Wicker Emporium
A proud Canadian business since 1972, this store offers more than just wicker. It began as a small shop in Halifax and now has locations across the country. Known for its high-quality wood furniture, it also has a snappy collection of lighting, accessories and artwork.
Livingspace
Head to this two-level, 19,000-square-foot showroom in Vancouver’s Armoury District to revel in an unparalleled array of modern European furniture. Expect the usual suspects (Ligne Roset, Kartell, Alessi and more) and everything from flatware to full-on kitchen designs.
Celadon Collection
Montreal’s Celadon Collection epitomizes effortless chic. There’s an impressive roster of designers, including Kelly Wearstler. The store’s artful displays, reminiscent of a European atelier, ensure an inspirational furniture shopping experience.
AyA Kitchens
Come to any showroom (across Canada and the US) to make your dream kitchen a dream come true. Design styles include urban, transitional and classic, as well as the company’s CUBI, an award-winning modular system that maximizes storage. Or just come to stare at the jaw-dropping cooking spaces.
