In an already chaotic year, not even a global pandemic could stop some of the world’s biggest celebrities from making waves in the real estate market. While most of us were wistfully scrolling through our Instagram feeds thinking about our dream homes, everyone from J.Lo and Chrissy Teigen to The Weeknd and Cardi B either sold or purchased lavish new digs. As 2020 winds down, we look back at some of the biggest and most expensive celebrity moves that had us talking – and left us green with envy.
The Weeknd
Toronto-born R&B star The Weeknd has been trying to offload his jaw-dropping nine-bedroom, 14,000-square-foot Los Angeles property since July. (See? Even celeb real estate is struggling in these strange times.) Originally listed at a whopping $25 million, the Grammy winner has since slashed his asking price by about $4 million in an attempt to close the deal before we ring in the new year. Take the full tour of The Weeknd’s lavish LA mansion.
Cardi B & Offset
Hip-hop royalty Cardi B and Offset kicked off 2020 by purchasing a gorgeous 22,000-square-foot mega-mansion in the Buckhead neighbourhood of Atlanta, complete with five bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, an 1,800-bottle wine cellar and an underground shooting range. The couple, who recently reconciled after brief talks of divorce, will have plenty of space to celebrate the incoming new year. Want to see more? Peek inside Cardi B and Offset’s mansion.
John Legend & Chrissy Teigen
These two lovebirds had a tumultuous year, sharing intimate details about Chrissy Teigen’s pregnancy loss and battling online trolls. But the dynamic duo – now stronger than ever – had started the year off on a high note, with the purchase of a four-bedroom $5.1 million home in West Hollywood. Take the full tour of this “architectural masterpiece.”
Dr. Phil
Back in January (which feels like a lifetime ago, doesn’t it?), Dr. Phil made headlines when he listed his $5.75 million mega-mansion in Beverly Hills. The reason? His absolutely wild interior design choices, which include a vine-inspired wood staircase (see above) and a wall of guns. Don’t believe that it’s as chaotic as we’re saying? See for yourself how absolutely bonkers this mansion actually is – just don’t say we didn’t warn you! The Tiger King would be proud!
Ellen Degeneres & Portia de Rossi
The TV host has gone from beloved to beleaguered this year after the public fallout from accusations of a toxic work environment by employees both past and present. Perhaps Ellen’s been holed up in this Tudor-style home in the Santa Barbara enclave of Montecito the entire time – a $3.6 million property that she and wife Portia snapped up earlier in the year. Take the full tour of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi’s Montecito mansion.
Pharrell
The pop/R&B artist definitely made some Los Angeles realtors “Happy” when he sold his mind-blowing glass-walled Beverly Hills mansion for a hefty $16.95 million back in March. Perched on a hilltop overlooking L.A., the home’s floor-to-ceiling windows offer a striking exterior and offer breathtaking, unparalleled views. Take a virtual tour of the entire glass-friendly property.
Seth Rogen
Unfazed by the wonky real estate market during the height of the pandemic, Vancouver native Seth Rogen snapped up this modest $1.9M Spanish Revival-style cottage in West Hollywood. Originally built in the 1920s, there’s something so classic and Old Hollywood about the design and layout. See more of Seth Rogen’s West Hollywood home. We also break down the wealthiest Canadian actors of 2020.
Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez
Juliet balconies? Check. 10 bedrooms? Check! Views of the city skyline? Double check! This summer, J.Lo and A.Rod shelled out the astronomical sum of $40 million for this Spanish colonial-style estate situated on a 40,000-square-foot waterfront lot that boasts an infinity pool and a stunning view of the city’s skyline. Jenny from the block has certainly come a long, long way! Take the full tour – and prepare to be envious.
Kelly Clarkson
Currently in the midst of a divorce, the American Idol winner is still struggling to offload her lavish Tennessee mansion, located just outside Nashville. On the market for a year now, the 20,000-square-foot gated property surrounded by a wooded four-acre lot has been a tough sell in this current real estate climate – which no doubt has the star singing the blues. Got a spare $7 million lying around? Take a virtual tour of the property and see if it’s up your alley.
Britney Spears
The #FreeBritney movement was one of the biggest entertainment stories of 2020, with dedicated fans even showing up at the pop star’s court proceedings against her father’s conservatorship. In the thick of all that drama, the singer listed her luxurious six-bedroom Beverly Hills Mediterranean-style mansion which she purchased during her short-lived marriage to Kevin Federline. (Remember him?) Listed in the summer, the abode is still on the market for $6.8 million. Take the grand tour of the neutral, minimalist mansion.
Chris Meloni
If you could, would you invest in haunted real estate? At one point, that’s exactly what Chris Meloni did. Back in May, the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star listed his iconic Hollywood pad – which used to be the TV (and real-life home) of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson (from the vintage sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet). The 5,300-square-foot home was on the market for $6.5 million – and was snapped up pretty quickly given it’s spooky origins. Take a tour of the property and find out why multiple sources consider the house haunted.
Kim Cattrall
The Canadian Sex and the City alum is looking to part ways with this oceanfront cottage getaway in the Hamptons. Still currently on the market for $3.25 million, the cozy 1,300-square-foot abode may be smaller than the average celebrity vacation pad, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in rustic charm. Take the full tour of Kim Cattrall’s waterfront Hamptons cottage.
LeBron James
Someone certainly had a good year! This summer, the Los Angeles Lakers star (and recent NBA Champion) purchased a stunning $39 million Beverly Hills mansion with some seriously fascinating Hollywood history. Built in the 1930s with a 9,000-square-foot main house and two detached guest houses, the home boasts some of the most spectacular views that L.A. has to offer. See for yourself and peek inside LeBron James’ Hollywood home.
Lilly Singh
Canadian YouTube sensation Lilly Singh launched her own late-night talk show, A Little Late With Lilly Singh (airing weeknights on Global) late last year and she treated herself to a celebratory $4.1-million Los Angeles home. Situated on the top of a hill, it offers privacy and jaw-dropping views of the city and surrounding mountains. See inside her stylish new home we wish we could move into.
Lori Loughlin
Full House
star Lori Loughlin and fashion designer husband Mossimo Giannuli are currently serving their two-month prison sentences for their part in the college admissions scandal. Prior to that, they listed this stunning 12,000-square-foot property for a reported $28.7 million to allegedly help cover legal fees. Scandal aside, you’ll want to take a peek at this beautiful Bel-Air property.
Mindy Kaling
If these walls could talk, Mindy Kaling would find herself privy to some of old Hollywood’s juiciest gossip. The Emmy-nominated scribe purchased Frank Sinatra’s former mansion on Malibu’s Broad Beach for $9.5 million back in March. The mansion still boasts evidence of the crooner’s time living on the property, albeit with plenty of modern touches – see it for yourself.
Stassi Schroeder & Beau Clark
Back in the new year, former Vanderpump Rules star Stassi Schroeder (she was fired this past summer) and her fiance Beau Clark bought a historic four-bedroom home in the Hollywood Hills neighbourhood of Los Angeles. No doubt the couple have been hunkering down on the property after her controversial fallout with the reality series. Peek inside the $1.7 million home.
Steve Harvey
TV host Steve Harvey is living in style in Atlanta, where he plunked down $15 million in June for a 34,688-square-foot mansion formerly owned by Tyler Perry. Custom-built in 2007, the mansion was a recreation of the Palace of Versailles – complete with 17 acres of property, twin front foyer staircases, an expansive fountain, extensive landscaping and double-height windows that overlook the property. You have to see it to believe it.
