Bold Bedding
No matter your personal thoughts on Gwyneth Paltrow and her brand, there’s no denying her knack for creating calm, luxurious spaces. Here, in her Montecito, CA, guesthouse, the queen of “quiet luxury” showcases a new bedroom trend — bold bedding.
The bright, geometric blanket acts as a decorative foil to highlight the bedroom’s high-end natural materials (textured plaster, natural linen, wood and leather).
Beam Me Up
Once owned and lovingly restored by beloved actor couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, this mid-century modern gem boasts many original features.
But it’s the soaring vaulted ceilings and accompanying wood beams that really draw the eye — and immediately get added to our renovation wish list.
Velvet Over Ground
In 2023, Rihanna bought this mind-boggling 40th floor, 9,290-square-foot penthouse condo in Malibu, CA, for $21 million.
The sparkling LA view is unparalleled, yes, but it’s the sea of oversized velvet couches and coffee tables that’s holding our trend-finding focus.
Dopamine Dressing
It’s not surprising that Jim Carrey’s sprawling 2-acre Los Angeles estate, which went on the market in the summer of 2023 for $26.5 million, reflects his quirky personality (and decades of Hollywood-sized paycheques). White walls and bleached wood floors serve as the backdrop to a massive, eclectic art collection and rainbow-coloured rugs.
The use of bold colours on the floors and walls is the decorator’s version of “dopamine dressing” and it will be a big trend in 2024.
Bunk Mates
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’s Santa Barbara County beach house is as cute as a button — and has the best built-in bunk beds.
Customized integrated beds, storage bench seats and other tiny home-inspired, small-space-conscious design elements will continue to rise in popularity in 2024.
Island Living
No woman is an island — unless that woman is Cher. Here, in her former Miami mansion (which is currently listed for $42.5 million), the chef’s kitchen boasts a behemoth island topped with a single slab of stunning marble.
You don’t have to “Believe” but oversized kitchen islands are a trend taking over celebrity homes, and therefore, ours too.
Miles and Miles of Tile
When you’re Gisele Bündchen and you buy a $9.1 million Floridian equestrian estate, you better believe your bathroom tiles are made of natural stone.
But for us non-supermodel types, we’re taking this floor-right-up-to-the-ceiling bathroom-tile trend and swapping in the more price-conscious ceramic variety (although we might keep this view of the stables).
Parquet Party
Once the residence of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, this historic Georgetown property in Washington, DC, has been lovingly renovated and updated — it oozes charm.
In the primary bedroom, the dynamic parquet flooring is a standout feature, one that current-day designers will be scrabbling to recreate for their clients.
Fire Sale
Due to a very public divorce (and public court filings), it’s common knowledge that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had a very impressive portfolio of international properties. They sold this historic house in New Orleans when they split in 2016, but not before returning it to its former glory — with the addition of all the modern conveniences, of course.
They were ahead of the design-trend curve with the addition of an eye-catching Art Nouveau fireplace to the dining room, a feature that’s gaining in popularity even beyond celebrity homes.
Something About the Way You Sit Tonight
After New Orleans, we’re headed to Sir Elton John’s 13,500-square-foot mega-condo in Atlanta. Despite the $4.9 million price tag on this luxury property, the design tip is an accessible one — use chairs, not couches.
Yep, when setting up an intimate living room seating area, skip the sofa and try an arrangement of armchairs instead. They’re easy to reconfigure for a variety of hosting situations, plus they give everyone their own personal space, something we know paparazzi-hounded celebrities also value.
