HGTV.ca: How do you balance contemporary design in a family-friendly home?

DB: I’ve never been a big believer that a family-friendly house has to be void of style. That being said, you really have to know when to leave a party. Is it time to roll up that carpet, just until your pets are fully trained, or until the threat of spilled juice is passed? Choosing the right materials will make your life a lot easier. It took me ten years to realize that the white slip-covered couch I thought was so family-friendly because I could take it off and wash it, wasn’t that friendly after all, as I spent a lot more time than I wanted to stripping it off the couch and washing it. I finally gave in to a charcoal grey, microfibre sectional that has withstood multiple children, teenagers and often a naughty bulldog beautifully. Thankfully, a lot of mid-century modern furniture is made of very family-friendly material. There’s a wide variety of funky plastic and metal seating that will withstand even the stickiest hands!
