Shops may be opening up but months spent in lockdown taught us the thrill of tapping into our creative side and upcycling items found within our home to create DIY room decor. From easy statement walls made entirely out of tape, to a DIY cane dresser (one of 2021’s biggest trends!), these home decor projects are the definition of chuffed.
DIY Cane Furniture
Cane is one of the hottest decor trends for 2021, popping up on dressers, cabinets, bedside tables, and room dividers. You can take the easy route and shop the trend (investing in a piece like this black and cane Crate and Barrel dresser), but where’s the fun in that? Panels of cane can be easily applied to existing furniture. Top off the panel with a frame and you’re right on trend. (Check out this DIY cane cabinet for inspiration!)
A Statement Wall of Hats
A collection of hats makes for a great statement wall (and one filled with memories and stories of how the collection came to be). This hat organizer makes hanging hats a breeze, but simple nails, carefully spaced across a blank wall, works well too. You can space the hats out, with breathing room between each hat, or cluster them, overlapping the brims, for a truly bohemian display.

A Bouquet of Dried Flowers
Roses are red, violets are blue, dried flowers are trending, and you can make them, too! What could be more meaningful than capturing summer’s beauty, or a sentimental bouquet, as a dried arrangement to keep forever on display? After removing the leaves from your flowers, hang them upside down in a cold, dry room for four to six weeks. After that, you can place them in a vase and style them in your home. Easy peon-easy!
DIY Painted Baskets
Give old baskets a facelift with a quick coat of paint. You can keep it simple, taping off the bottom half to paint, or tap into the geometric trend with a design like this basket. It costs a pretty penny, but you can easily recreate the look at home using any size of basket, and leftover paint. (Try a gold or silver paint for a DIY that’ll truly pop.)

A Washi Tape Statement Wall
Washi tape is a must-have for any craft cupboard, perfect for scrapbooks and gift wrap, but the colourful tape can do so much more! With a little bit of imagination, you can create gorgeous statement walls. Whether taped up in stripes, Xs or crosses, they offer a little thrill of colour to blank walls, and best of all, they peel off with ease, making them ideal for rentals or fickle decorators.

A DIY Braided Rope Mirror
A rope mirror adds a nautical touch to any room, but it doesn’t have to cost a pirate’s bounty (like this beautiful option). With an extra long braided rope, you can easily adhere a border to any basic mirror. Use a hot glue gun and go inch by inch to ensure it’s perfectly placed and secure.

DIY Pom Pom Pillows
Put a little pep in the step of your plain Jane pillows with a DIY pom pom trim. You can order pom poms to match your existing colour (like the beautiful cream pillow here), or make your own using yarn. Either way, they add a playful touch that’s been trending everywhere from dorm rooms to cozy dens.
DIY Tie Dye Home Decor
Our entire closet is filled with colourful tie dye creations, why should our home be any different? You can tie dye everything from napkins to bedding, even curtains! You won’t believe the natural mood boost you’ll experience from living in a kaleidoscope of colours!
DIY Nailhead Trim Using Thumbtacks
A nailhead trim of brass adds that je ne sais quoi to tables, chairs and headboards, but you can easily create the look for less, with an existing upholstered headboard, and a pack of thumbtacks. Taking great care to ensure the tacks are hammered in in a straight line, with sides just touching, you’ll achieve that luxurious look, with nothing more than hardware store supplies.

DIY Antique Frames
If your old antique frames are starting to feel a tad dated, a coat of colourful neon paint gives an unexpected twist to the ornate beauties. For a truly unique spin, paint only the bottom half of the frame. The juxtaposition between the gold and neon will give any piece of art a hip, modern feel.
