Materials Required:

  • 12″ x 16″ x 1/8 acrylic sheet
  • Square
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil and sharpie
  • Clamps
  • Level
  • Drill
  • Heat gun
  • Screws and wall anchors
  • Painter’s tape
  • Scissors

Step 1: Measure Your Future Shelf

First, you can start by marking the dimensions of your future shelf and the size you would like it to be. We chose to use a 12″ x 16″ acrylic sheet for our soon-to-be shelf. Remove the protective film carefully from both sides of the acrylic sheet and then use a measuring tape to mark the desired width of your shelf with a sharpie and a square.

Step 2: Bend, Bend, Bend!

Now the fun begins. It’s time to bend your acrylic sheet! To create the L-shape for this shelf, you will need to attach the acrylic sheet to a table using two clamps, a piece of wood and a heat gun.

Start using the heat gun on the lowest setting and move it over the entire length of the acrylic sheet to ensure even heating during the process. Increase the heat slowly and once the acrylic becomes pliable, very gently bend it into a 90-degree angle. Make sure to bend it slowly.

Step 3: Time to Decorate

To add a personalized touch to this DIY acrylic shelf, we upcycled pieces of leftover vinyl in different colours to decorate it. Using scissors, you can cut the vinyl in different organic shapes and then stick them directly onto the shelf.

Step 4: Mount It on a Wall

Finally, you can make two holes with a drill (very carefully!) and mount the acrylic shelf using wall anchors that can support the weight of your future shelf accessories.
