Materials Required:
- 2×2 lumber
- Pocket hole jig and screws
- 3″ wood screws
- 1/4″ melamine boards
- Iron-on melamine veneer
- Primer
- Paint (to match your wall)
- Top coat (for durability)
- Table saw
- Drill
- Stud finder
- Level
- Measuring tape
- Iron
Step 1: Build the Frame
Start by constructing the frame for your floating shelves. Cut your 2×2’s to the desired length and use a pocket hole jig to create holes for screws at the joints. Assemble the frame by joining the pieces with pocket screws. This will create a sturdy base that will be attached to the wall.
Step 2: Attach the Frame to the Wall
Using a stud finder, locate the studs in your wall and mark their positions. Hold your frame up to the wall and ensure it is level. Once you’re satisfied with the placement, use 3″ screws to attach the frame directly to the wall studs. This will ensure your shelves are securely anchored and can hold weight without sagging.
Step 3: Add the Front Piece
Cut an additional piece of 2×2 wood to the same length as your frame and attach it to the front of the frame. This piece will give the shelf a clean, finished look and add extra support.
Step 4: Cut and Attach Melamine Boards
Next, cut your 1/4″ melamine boards to size using a table saw. These boards will form the top and bottom surfaces of your shelf. Attach the melamine boards to the frame using wood glue and clamps or finishing nails. Make sure the edges are aligned neatly with the edges of the frame.
Step 5: Apply Iron-On Melamine Veneer
To give your shelves a polished look, apply iron-on melamine veneer to the front and sides of the shelves. Cut the veneer strips to the appropriate length, then use a household iron to adhere them to the edges. Press firmly and allow the adhesive to set. Use a utility knife or veneer trimmer to trim any excess veneer.
Step 6: Caulk the Edges
For a seamless look between your shelves and the wall, use caulk to fill any gaps where the shelf meets the wall. Apply a bead of caulk along the edges and smooth it out with your finger or a caulking tool. This will create a clean transition and make your shelves look like a natural extension of the wall.
Step 7: Prime and Paint
With the veneer in place, it’s time to prime and paint your shelves. Start with a coat of primer to ensure the paint adheres well. Once the primer is dry, paint the shelves with a colour that matches your walls. This will create a seamless look, making the shelves appear as if they are part of the wall. Finally, apply a top coat to your painted shelves. This will protect the paint and provide a durable finish that can withstand everyday use. Allow the top coat to dry completely before placing any items on your new floating shelves.
