How to Replicate Ellen Pompeo’s Midcentury Malibu Bedroom on a Budget

As a self-proclaimed interior design enthusiast, actress Ellen Pompeo’s real estate portfolio includes some of the most stylish celebrity homes we’ve ever seen. Now that Ellen, who has portrayed the surgeon on the hit show Grey’s Anatomy for 19 seasons, is officially saying goodbye to her longstanding role, it’s only fitting that she treated herself to a new beach house in Malibu, California.

The stunning midcentury modern haven marks Ellen and her interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s fourth project together. By now, you might even say that they’re each other’s person. “We’ve been in each other’s lives for so long we know what the other will like before even showing it to them,” he told Architectural Digest.

Ellen enjoys this Malibu oasis with her husband, Chris Ivery, and their three kids. Quality family time was a significant consideration during the design of the primary bedroom. “My husband wanted a custom-made bed so that all the kids could sleep together (with us) on the weekends. So the bed is extra big, and this is where we watch movies, light a fire, and lay in bed, all of us fighting over which movie to watch,” she shares in the Architectural Digest video tour

The actress’s whole home is filled with remarkable design choices, but Ellen’s spectacular bedroom is one of our favourite spaces. Are you looking to refresh your bedroom like Ellen’s? Here’s how to get the luxury look on a budget.

White Geometric Table Lamp

It’s safe to say the luxury Blackman Cruz table lamps that adorn Ellen’s midcentury modern bedroom are likely out of budget for most of us (some of his table lamps go for approximately USD $4,000).  Luckily you can easily recreate the modern look at home with a pair of these all-white geometric table lamps.

Olive Green Cushion

Jewel-toned colours will continue to dominate in 2023. Ellen’s single olive green bed cushion adds a pop of colour to her primarily black, white and gray bedroom.

Sherpa Ottoman

Ellen’s midcentury modern bedroom features a trendy black stool with an upholstered white seat cover that looks really similar to a sherpa or boucle fabric. Since we’re always looking for small-space storage options, we’re partial to this cozy accessory!

Oui Sherpa Storage, Indigo, $90.

Faux Potted Tree

You don’t need a green thumb to enjoy a touch of greenery in your home. Although it might not be identical to Ellen’s, this faux tree comes with a modern white cement pot that helps recreate the Hollywood icon’s sleek bedroom.

Artificial Aralia Tree, Bouclair, $150.

Of course, some other luxury elements of the bedroom are trickier to recreate on a budget. Ellen shares that her room’s feature wall featuring black and white marble backsplash is an homage to a movie called I Am Love. As for us, we’ll be sticking with wallpaper
