In honour of Canada Day, we asked your favourite HGTV Canada stars what they love most about our country and being Canucks. As expected, they mentioned everything from the kindness of strangers to their passion for hockey – but some of their answers might surprise you. Here’s what they think makes the Great White North worth celebrating.

Scott McGillivray, one of the stars on Home to Win and the host of Scott’s Vacation House Rules says: “I spend a lot of time travelling and I am always so proud to tell people where I’m from! Canada is the greatest country on the planet, because of the endless opportunities for those willing to work for it. We truly have the ability to do anything we set our minds to and to be whomever we want to be. The fishing is also pretty epic!”
Odeen Eccleston
, a real estate specialist and one of the stars of HGTV Canada’s Hot Market says: “I am likely one of the most patriotic Canadians there is! I really think that this country is the belle of the world’s ball! Super proud to be born and raised in Canada, the opportunities for personal and professional growth are limitless. It’s a country where a kaleidoscope of cultures and people from all around the world are not only embraced, but celebrated.”

Bryan Baeumler, star of HGTV Canada’s hit series Island of Bryan says: “Canadians are peaceful and happy. We remember to help our neighbours. We say ‘sorry aboot that.'”

Sarah Baemmler who co-stars with husband Bryan on Island of Bryan says: “To be Canadian is to be humble, thoughtful and kind. We’re just nice people.”

Rizwan Malik
, one of the stars of HGTV Canada’s Hot Market says: “What I love most about being Canadian is travelling all over the world and telling random strangers that I am from Canada! I have yet to meet someone who has not reacted positively, Canadians are loved globally and there is great pride in that.”

Sam Pynn, one of the stars on Home to Win and co-host of Save My Reno says: “I could go on and on about why I love being Canadian. We’re kind, friendly, helpful and polite – we’re peacekeepers. As a Canadian you feel this whether you are home or travelling abroad. It’s a wonderful feeling.”

Kortney Wilson
Kortney Wilson, who stars in Making It Home With Kortney & Dave says: “[Since moving to Nashville], I miss the people. I miss Tim Horton’s. I miss the energy that Canadians bring. They’re so polite. Like they’re genuinely caring and they’re very transparent. I feel like Canadians are not afraid to tell you what they think.”

Brian McCourt of Backyard Builds says: “I was raised to be polite and welcoming to strangers and I feel this is a commonality between all Canadians. We aren’t too big and we aren’t too small – we’re just right.”

I am inspired by Canadian culture as we define it; a mixed salad of immigrant experience and Indigenous heritage held together by a strong commitment to human rights and equality. I travel all over the world for my work and no matter where I go, I encounter dozens of people with family in our beautiful country. The faces of Canada are the faces of the world.”

of Hot Market says: “I love being Canadian for so many reasons. Our pro-peace ways, education opportunities and diverse multiculturalism are at the top of my list, especially since I’m a first-generation Canadian from Italian immigrants. Oh and we’re basically untouchable in hockey. What’s not to love?”
Dave Kenney

Watching the entire country rally together as the Raptors won Canada’s first NBA Championship was incredible!”
