After binge-watching several episodes of your much-loved HGTV Canada shows, do you ever wonder if the hosts have favourites? Surely, there are standout projects in their mind. From Mike Holmes to Sabrina Smelko, HGTV Canada stars reveal the favourite projects they’ve ever worked on.
Drew Scott
“I mean with all the shows on Property Brothers, we have so many amazing homeowners,” says Drew. “However, there was two that we worked with, Edith and Fred. So, Fred, instead of telling us what he thought of the space, he would, if he saw a kitchen he really loved, he’d say: ‘This kitchen, it’s like, mmm-mmm-mmm’ and he’d do a little dance move. If he didn’t like something, he’d be like: ‘Oh, this living room, nnn-nnn-nnn.’ So, we learned to read between the lines.”
Jonathan Scott
“I remember the very first time I did a kosher home, a kosher kitchen,” Jonathan reveals. “I didn’t know what that was. I didn’t know what was needed. So, I really dove in to learn a little bit more about the Jewish culture and why everything has to be separated. So that was pretty fascinating. It’s essentially like fitting two kitchens in one space. So, I’ve done a couple of those to date.”
Jonathan and Drew Scott
“In New Orleans, we did a renovation on a side-by-side, sort of like a duplex,” Jonathan and Drew share. “That was the house that was devastated after Hurricane Katrina. And then we came in and fixed it up and gave it back to the family, fully furnished. So, that was a fun project.”
Mike Holmes
“When you’ve been making it right for homeowners on television for over 15 years (not to mention my career as a contractor long before I stepped in front of the camera), it’s tough to narrow down your favourite renovation project,” says Mike. “At the end of the day, they were all really special to me and I couldn’t pick just one. So, here are nine of my favourite projects I’ve ever taken on.”
Scott McGillivray
“I’ve designed and renovated hundreds of income properties over my 15-year career,” says Scott. “From the ‘rat house’ to a heritage building, these are my 15 favourites ones.”
Sabrina Smelko
“I could say something amazing about each episode and my experience, but Melina and Emma take the cake!” says Sabrina. “A lot of factors contribute to how filming days go, including how long the commute was or if Piper kept me up the night before, but from the get-go, Melina and Emma’s episode was memorable for me. It was late summer, a lot of my moving plans had been sorted and we were all in our groove. Paired with that, the home itself was super unique and I fell for it (and the homeowners) right away. Built mid-century, the home still had many original features: think sunken living room, a spiral staircase, two-storey windows, a gorgeous private yard with a pool backing onto a ravine…need I say more?”
Bryan Baeumler
“Working outside is not always a pleasant task in Canada,” says Bryan. “With our winters and the uncertainty of the weather, it can be quite unforgiving. However, when the sun is out, it’s all the more reason to get outside and create an outdoor retreat that you can enjoy for the balmy months ahead. Here are eight of my favourite outdoor reno projects that I’ve worked on – I hope they inspire you, too!”
