Although it might be hard to believe, 2020 is right around the corner and, with it, comes plenty of speculation as to what will become the hottest home trends of the new year. So we went ahead and asked some of the biggest HGTV Canada stars to gaze into their crystal balls and predict some of the decor and interior design trends that we’ll be seeing a lot more of in the coming months. You’ll discover you’re a bona fide trendsetter if you follow these pointers from the Property Brothers to Tiffany Pratt and Brian McCourt, among others.
Herringbone
For Home to Win: For the Holidays host Sangita Patel, her 2020 home trend prediction was a simple case of misused design terms. “One thing I’ve been noticing more of was what I thought was chevron-type flooring, but it’s actually herringbone,” she tells HGTV Canada. “I thought it looked both so old, yet so new and unique.”

Bold and Eclectic
Tiffany Pratt, the Home to Win: For the Holidays’ DIY queen certainly knows a thing or two about bold designs and patterns, so it’s no surprise that colour is the big 2020 trend that she’s quick to point out. “There’s been a huge influx of colour,” she says. “People are really developing this ‘I just inherited all my grandmothers’ antiques’ [aesthetic] that is spliced in with modern furniture. What I love about the current trends are that people are working with what they’ve got. They’re investing in cool new things and really enveloping everything in their own personal style and deciding that eclectic is cool.”
Hitting One Colour – Hard
Backyard Builds star Sarah Keenleyside has noticed a growing trend toward a rainbow of colours where once we embraced more monochromatic white and grey interiors. “Over the last couple of years, I’ve noticed the saturation of colour becoming bolder,” she tells HGTV Canada. “People are not afraid of colour anymore and they’re really hitting it hard in a room. You’ll see more layering of the same tone in a room. So, if you have a deep navy on the wall then you might also have a brighter blue sofa.”
Hello Colour!
One thing Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott is glad to see on the rise again is colour – bold designs like the above kitchen renovated by brother Drew and himself. “It’s nice to see it coming back,” he tells HGTV Canada. “Before that, it was all neutral and grey. But colour is coming back in a very bold way with interesting textures and mixed metals.”

Art Deco Lighting
It looks like mid-century lighting will have to make way and share the limelight with art deco in 2020. This beautiful chandelier from a Worst to First dining room makeover introduces a whole lot of elegant curves and a cozy lighting that also happens to be super flattering. Wall Murals
Move aside, wallpaper, because Backyard Builds star Brian McCourt thinks wall murals are the next big thing in home trends. “In [Home to Win: For the Holidays] you’ll see we use a blown-up jumbo floral print in one of the rooms,” he tells HGTV Canada. “We’ve come such a long way because now we have these huge printers that can create them on such a massive scale so you’re not doing these tiny repeats where it feels busy and cluttered.” It would seem Brian had a solid jumpstart on this trend – the whimsical bedroom above features a hand-painted wall mural designed by Brian and Tifffany Pratt from season three of Home to Win.
Showcase Pantries
Gorgeous steal-worthy pantries are nothing new, but, according to the Worst to First stars, they’ll take centre stage in 2020 as homeowners seek to showcase their stocked cubbies and Marie Kondo-style organizational skills.

Make Way for Bidets
Save My Reno‘s Sebastian Clovis has one home trend on his design wish list – bidets. And he’s totally convinced us as to why we should be more open to embracing them. “There’s the cleanliness factor, but it’s also about the new wave that everybody is on right now that I am loving and supporting and that wave is the zero-waste movement,” he tells HGTV Canada. “How many times a year do you have to go out and buy giant rolls of toilet paper? If bidets aren’t currently becoming a trend, I’m trying to make them a trend!”
Anything Goes
Samantha Pynn of Home to Win: For the Holidays predicts that homeowners will spend more time contemplating and embracing their personal aesthetics. “It’s really all over the map,” she says. “When it comes to pattern and colour, its anything goes. It’s personal decorating … whatever speaks to you. I feel we’re not afraid to express that anymore.”

Home Technology
For 2020, Property Brothers star Drew Scott believes high tech gadgets will continue its upward swing as a hot home trend. “A lot of tech has sustainable options and it’s much more cost-effective nowadays so the fact that I can operate everything in my house just off my phone is something blows a lot of our clients’ minds,” he tells HGTV Canada.
