If you’ve got a handful of kids, an outdated kitchen, no master bedroom to speak of and your ensuite shower is used mostly for storage, obviously you’re going to consider moving. That was the case for a couple on a recent episode of Love it or List It, at any rate. But once Hilary Farr got her hands on this space, suddenly the homeowners were greeted by a white and bright home that wasn’t just family friendly, but contemporary and beautiful too. It’s no wonder this transformation made it impossible for them to move.
Friendly Exterior
Right away you can see the appeal of this coveted detached home thanks to its bright white exterior. Baby blue shingles give the home a country chic feel, while the shrubs add the sense that this home is well loved and cared for.
Open Concept
Although the entire home couldn’t be given the open concept treatment, this living-dining room combo creates a long and spacious feel. The length of the room draws the eye while the fresh paint feels upscale and contemporary.
Nooks and Crannies
Every inch of the space is being used, from the mounted flat screen TV to the armchairs, sofas and corner tables. By keeping the furniture in shades of grey, white and cream, and sticking to smaller pieces you get a spacious and flowing room despite all of the accoutrements.
Neutral Accents
Neutral pieces like the area rug and natural coffee table offset all the whites and greys and give the space a more earthy finish.
Paint it White
Meanwhile Hilary painted the fireplace bricks white to match the rest of the space, making the unit seem new and creating a pretty focal point for the living area.
Easy Transition
On the other side Hilary picked a darker sofa, which still works well with the wall and floor colour but begins to transition the eye towards the dining room in the back.
Modern Shelves
A large family is always going to accumulate a lot of stuff; Hilary solved this problem with a genius shelving solution halfway between the spaces with plenty of room for mementos and books.
Dining Blues
These pretty blue-grey chairs match the rest of the decor and add a textured feel to the space. The custom dining table adds a rich finish, while the overhead light and sweeping curtains boast a more contemporary vibe.
Office Space
Given that these parents often need to work from home, it was important for Hilary to create a functioning, separate space for them to do so. This small desk-cabinet duo certainly does the trick while matching the rest of the home’s new colour scheme.
So Sews
A custom-made sewing area for the mom helped sway her towards the “love it” side, and we can’t say we blame her. Just look at that storage and available work area Hilary created.
Dream Kitchen
The real selling point of the renovated home came with this kitchen refresh. A sturdy new island is made even more gleaming by the matching new cabinets above and modern, stainless steel appliances.
A Touch of White
Below Hilary saved the old cabinets and just gave them a small paint job, proving yet again that sometimes you actually can work with what you already have. Above new countertops were a surprise anniversary presents from Hubby, another small feature that convinced both homeowners to stay.
Eat-In Area
In the other corner Hilary placed a round table that fits well in the space and is a little more kid-friendly than the oversized islands you see in most open concept homes these days. Simple chairs and a circular light fixture complete the look without taking over the space.
Master Dreams
The new master bedroom didn’t take much to refresh either; some fresh paint, linens and throw pillows transformed this into a luxurious adult space for the parents to escape to and have their own sweet dreams come bedtime.
Walk-In Shower
Now this is a shower that you definitely don’t want to use for storage. Oversized and customized to have the perfect shower every time, the shower also features bright white tiles that help keep everything clean and fresh looking.
Country Inspirations
A soft green-grey gives the ensuite a country touch. Loads of cabinets and some extra storage off to the side ensure that this family will never run out of space in here, creating a real zen room for mom and dad. No wonder they never want to leave this house.
