In December 2016, the world lost socialite, movie star and style icon Zsa Zsa Gabor at the age of 99. Known for her indulgent lifestyle, Gabor lived out her final years in an opulent Bel Air mansion with her ninth husband, Frederic Prinz von Anhalt. The estate actually sold three years ago, after being listed in 2012 for $14.9 million. After the 2013 sale, Gabor made a “life estate” deal which allowed her to live there until her death, with the couple expected to pay a $325,000 yearly fee. Now, after Gabor’s death, escrow is expected to close in about 90 days, so Prinz von Anhalt will be looking for a new home when the new owner takes possession.
Opulence Abounds
Zsa Zsa Gabor was known for her high-style living (and spending!), and spent much of her life in this the Hollywood-regency style home, which sits on an acre behind the East Gate on Bel Air Road.
Tinseltown Glamour
Reportedly boasting more than 8,000 square feet of living space, the posh mansion contains 26 rooms, six of which are bedrooms, and is decorated with all the glitz and glamour you would expect from an iconic movie star, including an abundance of antiques and baroque-style furnishings and accoutrements.
Hollywood History
The home was built in 1955 for eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. Gabor purchased the estate in 1973 for $280,000, making a handsome profit when she sold it to the current owner 40 years later for $11 million. Pictured here is one of the many rooms designed for entertaining, an indoor patio with a walkout to a stunning city view.
Rising Costs
Prior to its sale in 2013, the couple were reportedly facing foreclosure due to the to the rising cost of Gabor’s health care (rumour has it that Gabor’s cash-strapped husband, more than 25 years her junior, took out some reverse mortgages on the home). Clearly the lavish mansion couldn’t have been inexpensive to maintain over the years, with numerous rooms such as this one, featuring a large bar for entertaining and a lovely built in bookshelf that goes straight to the ceiling.
That’s Entertainment!
In her heyday, Gabor was known as one of Hollywood’s most impressive party-givers, and entertained many luminaries in her home throughout the years. In fact, this ultra-formal dining room has hosted the likes of Ronald Reagan, Queen Elizabeth and Frank Sinatra, to name just a few of Gabor’s famous guests.
Attention to Detail
The home’s intricate attention to detail is on display in this room, with its stunning array of antiques atop gleaming wood floors.
A Lavish Setting
The mansion took a few years to sell and is said to have briefly been the home of Elvis Presley, although this fact has been disputed. More recently, the home was used as the location for the HBO biopic “Behind the Candelabra” starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, doubling as the lavish home of the late Liberace.
Master Ensuite
Some sources say the new owner – an L.A. real estate mogul – may extensively renovate or even bulldoze the mansion in order to build a new one. Not only would a piece of Hollywood history be no more, but it would be a shame to see the demise of this huge master bath, featuring his and her sinks and vanities, and a massive walk-in shower.
Glorious Views
The stunning rooftop patio provides views of downtown Los Angeles, the Pacific Ocean and, in the distance, Catalina Island.
Backyard Bliss
Gabor’s glamourous lifestyle extends out to the backyard, which features a large ornate swimming pool and inviting patio.
