Coach Bubba is kind of a legend. The local educator, at-risk youth worker and football coach has helped countless kids over the years, giving them guidance and letting them crash on his couch when they needed a space to sleep. But when it came to his own living situation? Well let’s just say that Bubba, his partner Vanessa, and their four kids were more than slightly cramped in their three-bedroom, one-storey semi. Enter the Family Home Overhaul team, headed up by designer Samantha Pynn and contractor Sebastian Clovis (who knew and played with Bubba back in the day). See how the team took this cramped home and transformed it into a touchdown of a family space with a designated area for everyone.

Open Space Throughout
In the new main living area Samantha Pynn and Sebastian Clovis knocked out all of the walls in order to max out this tight-knit family’s living space. They redid the kitchen in a bright white that helps reflect light and added colour to the cabinetry below, all while adding a giant island to add prep and seating space. Along the back is a giant new sleeper sofa for any guests Bubba and his crew happen to be hosting, and in the dining room there’s plenty of seating for everyone thanks to this oversized table and space-saving benches.

An Adult Retreat
The way the home was previously set up, the primary bedroom was cramped and featured zero closet space. Vanessa and Bubba also happened to be sharing the room with their youngest kid. But along the back were the other two bedrooms, so Samantha Pynn and Sebastian Clovis knocked out that wall to create a new, spacious primary bedroom that feels like a retreat-particularly for Vanessa. There’s enough room for a queen bed, a vanity table, and a sitting area, not to mention three closets for all of the couple’s things.

A Reconfigured Kids Room
Upstairs it made sense for Sam and Seb to transform the previous primary bedroom into a space for the couple’s youngest son, who previously had a tiny bed in his parent’s room. Now, thanks to new bunkbeds, a small desk, and lots of storage for all of his toys, this is the perfect setup for him to play in. The white, streamlined furniture makes the most of the room while the lighter blue walls give personality without sucking up light. Add in a few dark accents (the rug, blankets), and this is a kid’s room that’s full of function and design appeal.

A New Family Room
While the family was impressed with what the >Family Home Overhaul team was able to do upstairs, they were floored with how these guys transformed their basement. Before, the mould-ridden area had a ton of awkward nooks and crannies as a result of restrictive walls. By taking them all down and reconfiguring the space, there was a world of new possibilities-including this new kid-friendly family room. There is plenty of seating for everyone thanks to the oversized sectional and mid-century modern arm chairs, the bright colours add a modern feel, and the space itself is filled with light thanks to the large window, pot lights and lamps.
An Additional Washroom
To avoid a high-traffic situation in the upstairs washroom, Samantha Pynn and Sebastian Clovis made sure to not only add this four-piece bath to the new space downstairs, but they also added a double vanity. That way the kids won’t have to fight over sink space, but there’s also plenty of storage underneath for everyone’s things. Add in a large tub, some simple tiling with grey (not white!) grout, and lots of lighting, and this is the perfect area to stand up to everyday kid use.

Extra Bedroom Space
Sharing a room with a younger sister who always wants to get into your stuff is never fun, so Samantha Pynn and Sebastian Clovis made sure to give each of the other three kids their own space as well. This bedroom features a bed with a simple white headboard and colourful accents, as well as personality-filled walls and an area rug to pull it all together.
Maxing Out the Space
In the younger sister’s bedroom Samantha Pynn and Sebastian Clovis constructed a perfectly-pink space that features lots of room to grow. There’s shelving for toys and knickknacks, a nightstand with a reading lamp, and a small closet space. But the best part is the matching trundle bed. It’s not just perfect for sleepovers as this tyke gets older, but it’s great for when members of this large family need to crash for the night.

A Room For Everyone
Also downstairs is this third bedroom for Bubba’s oldest son, who now has his own set of bunkbeds, this cute matching shelf, and lots of designer accents like the chair, the striped area rug, and the colourful nightstand. There’s lots of natural light in this room thanks to the double windows, and the sturdy laminate flooring below (which is featured all throughout the basement) is waterproof. Making it even better? All of that flooring is designed to stand up to seasonal shifting and kid wear-and-tear alike.
Outdoor Bunkie
With everyone getting their own space to hang out inside, Sam and Seb felt that it was only appropriate to give Bubba his own little area outside. To create this touchdown of a bunkee, the duo were joined by Argos’ defensive back Jermaine Gabriel, who couldn’t say enough about how Coach Bubba helped him in life. The result is this personalized space full of memorabilia, a TV, and lots of seating. Now Bubba can watch football when he wants, without having to hide in his daughters’ room on an uncomfortable chair like he used to.

A Truly Transformed Space
What’s a true home transformation if you don’t tackle the outside as well as the inside? Thanks to a bright new door, safe railings, fresh landscaping, and an updated driveway, the outside was barely recognizable to the family.
