While many people stockpile essentials such as non-perishable foods and water (and toilet paper, apparently), the wealthy one per cent are setting their sights on “survival” real estate amidst the coronavirus panic. In particular, they’re looking to Survival Condo, a multi-storey underground former Cold War-era missile silo in Kansas that is now selling units as part of its luxury complex. The condos, which were designed by developer Larry Hall to house 75 people for more than five years, are available to purchase starting at $1.5 million (USD). From spa-like swimming pools and recreational rooms to open-concept living arrangements and high-end security, take a peek inside this piece of survival real estate.
Under Construction
The original structure was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers back in the 1960s during the height of the Cold War tensions. The goal was to “withstand a nuclear explosion.” In 2008, developer Larry Hall joined forces with the state of Kansas to turn the then-abandoned silos into functional living quarters. Here, the Survival Condo is under construction in 2012. Have you also seen this eco-friendly cabin designed for life on Mars?
Kitchen
According to the website: “there are two underground structures, one two-storey and one fourteen-storey structure. Together there is just over 54,000 square feet of underground, nuclear-hardened, protected space.” That space includes condo units that feature open-concept kitchen and living room spaces similar to those you’d see in any high-rise today.
Living Room
For those interested in putting down some dough on a unit, there are four options to choose from: a half-floor layout (900 square feet) perfect for a family of five, a full-floor layout (1,820 square feet) ideal for groups of six to 10 people, the luxurious penthouse space and a customizable option to suit the buyers’ needs. Each condo also boasts state-of-the-art technology and stainless steel appliances.
Dining Room
As for food? All units come equipped with a five-year supply of freeze-dried and dehydrated food per person. Additionally, condo owners can enjoy their own personal washer-dryer and fully-furnished, ready-to-move-in units. To avoid being starved for sunlight, each condo also features “virtual windows” that display video of the outdoors in real time. You could also look into these indoor plants that thrive on low light.
Common Room
To avoid a sense of isolation or general restlessness, the common area offers condo owners a space to play a round of pool, gather to watch TV or otherwise simply socialize with one another. It even has it’s own dining and kitchen area for those who want to share their meals with fellow residents. To create even more space, these tips for arranging furniture could come in handy.
Bar Lounge
For a little downtime you can swing by the bar lounge area and take in a sports game on TV while sipping from your beverage of choice. Want to sleep inside a potato? Check out the strangest Airbnb listings in the world.
