Whether you’re a consummate crafter or a child at heart, there’s no denying the appeal of this epic backyard clubhouse. For Ali and Hana, the backyard hideaway provides space for both of their children, Mateja and Mila, to follow their passions, whether it be tap dancing, drumming or violin (with no concern for noise complaints!). Brian McCourt and Sarah Keenleyside, the geniuses behind this clubhouse, even managed to squeeze in an area for Mom and Dad to enjoy!
An Artful Space
When you have kids who are multitalented you definitely want to create an inspirational space that allows them to tap into all aspects of their creativity. So Sarah and Brian designed this space as an artful studio of sorts, one with plenty of colourful accents that the kids can grow with as their tastes change and develop.
An Indoor Vibe
Thanks to the dark flooring and neutral furniture this space feels like an extension of the house itself. The two sides of the room are divvied by the sliding barn door, allowing both the kids to have their own creative spaces when need be.
Creative Corner
The desk area is the perfect size for a kid, but it features plenty of big details. The floating unit is minimalistic and doesn’t take up a ton of space, but it’s a well-defined area thanks to the cow-patterned tiles below and the artful display above.
A Pencil Wall
Want to know how to add an inexpensive but artful touch to a wall? Create a rainbow of pencils, of course. Just look at how pretty this feature turned out thanks to a little creativity.
Centre Stage
Considering how talented Mateja is, it was only natural that Brian and Sarah crafted a stage for him to drum on. We love how they cut patterns into coloured soundproofing boards to help quiet down the space, all while allowing plenty of natural light to flow through via the “garage band” inspired wall.
Jam Sessions
Sometimes you just need to get your chill on, especially when listening to your music. So Sarah and Brian installed this hammock chair which is fun for kids to swing with, but relaxing enough for anyone to hang out on.
Extra Details
There’s a worldly feel to the way Sarah staged this record player with the globe, adding instant personality to an otherwise run-of-the-mill corner bookshelf.
A Little DJ Station
When the adults saw how cool the kids’ space was shaping up to be, of course they wanted their own area in the backyard too. So Brian and Sarah created a little outdoor oasis for the adults, completely with a fun, youthful touch in the form on a DIY DJ station.
Stocking Up
Every good DJ needs to keep up his or her energy, which is why there’s plenty of extra space for snacks and drinks. Anything that saves another trip inside is a win according to us. What we love most though is how Sarah was able to repurpose this old piece of furniture with a little stain and some TLC.
An Outdoor Oasis
This deck area is a space the whole family can enjoy whenever they want to soak in some sun. The wire framed chairs are just as funky and creative as the furniture and decor within the clubhouse, while the wood wall adds instant charm and privacy. The end result is a beautiful and functional space that the kids will love for years to come as the adults retreat into the much quieter household.
