Like the seasons, design trends are cyclical, with every year providing a fresh set of guidelines for at-home style. We’re looking toward 2019 to see what the New Year will bring, so we can decide what could help re-energize the look and feel of our living rooms.
Bold Hues
For years, designers have been playing it safe when it comes to living-room paint colours – soft whites, dove greys and a whole palette of pacifying neutrals have covered walls. Well, in 2019, bold colour choices will make a major comeback, like muted navy blues, deep sage green and rich purples. Get out your colour wheel now!
Acrylic Furniture
As more and more of us move into compact condos and snug townhomes, we no longer have the space for bulky, square-foot-sapping furnishings – enter acrylic furniture. Ideal for small living rooms, a see-through acrylic coffee or side table provides optimum function without any visual distraction.
Comfort First
In 2019, living-room seating that looks like expensive sculpture is out; pieces that provide extreme comfort are in. From overstuffed, velvet-upholstered armchairs to deep-seated sofas piled with huggable pillows, anything soft and super comfy is now the ultimate luxury.
Compact Luxury
Having a cozy gas fireplace in your living room will always be on trend, especially the sleek variety that seamlessly blends in with the furniture.
Boho Style
While layering fabrics and patterns is a trend that comes around again and again, in 2019 the fortune teller’s tent is getting a modern makeover. Patterns are more refined and colours muted – vintage pieces mix with contemporary ones to create an updated bohemian vibe.
Light Flooring
One of the most effective ways to make even the smallest living room feel expansive is to install light-coloured floors. These lighter tones (go for a birch, light oak or white-washed style) reflect light and immediately brighten up the space.
Jewel Tones
Open a pack of Crayola crayons and you’ll find the colour inspiration for living-room accents, furnishings and artwork this coming year. Layering edgy jewel tones such as royal blue, ruby red and emerald green against stark white walls creates a dramatic effect that looks decidedly of-the-moment.
Going Custom
Being able to upgrade a tired gas fireplace or poor paint job with ease and as little work as possible is something smart homeowners will always gravitate towards – no matter what’s trending.
Mixing Metals
It’s a common belief amongst decorators that once you’ve picked your preferred accent metal, you have to stick to it. But since it’s all about mixing it up in 2019, metallics no longer need to have the same finish. Grouping stylish objects and other decorative accents in two to three varying shades (think silver, pewter and bronze) is a modern way to add interest and shine to a living room.
Flower Power
The rise of hipster flower markets, the popularity of urban gardening and a resurgence of the back-to-the-land movement among millennials have all contributed to the rise of floral and pastoral-inspired wallpapers. Whether it’s large, rambling tea roses or more abstract cherry blossom designs… as long as it grows, anything goes.
