Extend summer right into the fall with stylish spaces under the skies like one of these. The trick? Treat outdoor rooms as though they’re indoors, but with durable accessories and furniture – and a heater or two as autumn approaches.
Grainy Days
HGTV Canada’s Bryan and Sarah Baeumler’s country-chic Ontario home is seriously covetable. This is the second deck on the forested property, where the couple loves to linger by the fire. The sophisticated details merge indoors and outdoors, including embedded pot lights, sconces flanking the fireplace and of course that wood ceiling. Read more about this scenic property here.
California Dreaming
No, this isn’t California; it just looks like it is. Designer Jo Alcorn imported a slice of sunshine to Canada for this project, where showy plants, a muted carpet and pillows and a small-scale sofa that sports a lower back keep the airy Cali-inspired digs on point. Note the hits of pretty pink on the bar cart and in the accessories. Read more about how she created this dream retreat here.
Airy Escape
You don’t have to pack your patio with furniture to create an outdoor room you’ll want to hang out in. Add a sectional, a pile of pillows, tables for resting drinks and something durable underfoot and you’re good to go. See more of how Vancouver designers Daphne Nielsen, owner of Once A Tree Furniture, and Wes Thurn pulled it all together here. We also love how the neutral furnishings don’t compete with the scenic surroundings.
Divine at Dusk
HGTV Canada’s pergola-happy Paul Lafrance created two distinct seating zones on this classy set-up. The modern privacy screens work well to demarcate the sofa area at left, while the ivy creates a stylish backdrop to the loungers. See more of the project here.
Cozy Comforts
This tasteful seating nook from home-and-garden staple Terrain makes outdoor life a breeze. The weatherproof set includes two sofas, two corner seats, two armless chairs and even a dining table complete with a glass top (find it here). Add a few heaters to enjoy the space well into autumn – and don’t forget the string lights.
Light My Fire
Spending more to let the professionals put your yard into good use can really pay off. Case in point: this outdoor room designed by Paul Lafrance. Anchored by a contemporary fireplace and hefty stone pillars on the pergola, the patio has major cachet.
Decked Out Condo
Mix and match Canadian Tire’s Canvas Beaumont collection any way you like and you’re on your way to living-room nirvana at the condo (or the house). The weathered finish and sturdy cushions have a luxurious feel we can get behind. Don’t forget to accessorize with a floor lamp, plants and a wicker basket for blankets when the temp drops.
Bring the Indoors Out
Some people still think terraces need to, well, look like terraces. We’re here to break the illusion. Yes, there are tons of fashionable and durable carpets on the market made for outdoor use. Ditto stylish accent cushions and lanterns. We’re digging how designer Jillian Harris went for a simple yet stylish vibe on this patio.
Add LED Light Boxes
Got lots of lawn? Set aside a chunk of space to create an outdoor room. Designed by Paul Lafrance, this one features walls with inlaid LED light boxes and dark fabrics for a luxurious feel. See more of this gorgeous space here.
The Stripe is Right
Who says you need pavers to create a room? Set up a super-cool living room right on the grass using modern, patterned pieces. Find these French-feeling furnishings at Serena & Lily. Those stripes are très amazing! And major style points for the sofa that resembles weathered, bleached rattan.
Tuscan Retreat
Cart the food and drinks outside (less mess in the kitchen) and enjoy summer for as long as you can like at Scott and Sabrina McGillivray’s Ontario home. The trick to this space? Elegant finishes including a plank ceiling (not shown but you can see it here), chandelier and custom fireplace. Have a peek at the rest of the dream digs here.
Boho Babe
For those drawn to a way more relaxing vibe outside, we give you this fab all-weather wicker sofa from Terrain (score it here). Strewn with plucky pillows, hippie-chic throws and a wood-burning fire pit, even the stuffiest types won’t be able to resist a turn out here.
It’s All About Balance
Decking seamlessly leads from indoors to outdoors to create a perfectly aligned seating area in this balanced, arbor-covered patio.
Draw Those Drapes
Cure claustrophobia indoors by adding onto your home’s square footage outside. This raised deck is ready for an afternoon hangout with friends. Heavy-duty drapes are ideal for providing protection from the sun, and small-scale cushy furnishings are much better than those sad plastic patio chairs we grew up with as kids.
Stylishly Streamlined
A streamlined sofa crafted out of sustainable teak cuts a fine figure on Restoration Hardware’s stunning Aviara Collection (score the look here). The linear concrete fireplace also makes an architectural statement, proving that outdoor living really rivals indoor spaces.
