Rumour has it that ‘Today’ host Matt Lauer recently purchased Richard Gere’s lavish mansion in the Hamptons for a reported $33 million. With that in mind, it’s probably no coincidence the highly paid ($6 mil per year) morning man has just sold his oceanfront Hamptons cottage, a surprisingly cozy little home priced at just under $4 mil. Here’s a look at the charming abode that Lauer is giving up. By Brent Furdyk
Hamptons Hideaway
Matt Lauer recently parted with this quaint oceanfront cottage, with three bedrooms and two baths within a compact 1,800 square feet.
Private Drive
The home may be small, but a long driveway ensures privacy – a must for a famous TV host who earns millions and allegedly commutes from Manhattan to the Hamptons in a helicopter.
Hamptons Land Baron?
As it turns out, this isn’t even Lauer’s main retreat in the Hamptons. According to ‘Variety’, Lauer and his wife are veritable Hamptons land barons; in addition to this cozy cottage, he also owns a 24-acre estate, a 40-acre commercial equestrian facility, Bright Side Farms, and (according to rumour) Strongheart Manor, purchased from Richard Gere.
Hamptons Living
The living room is comfy and spacious, boasting such features as bleached wood floors, a white brick fireplace and vaulted ceiling with rough-hewn wooden beams.
Lit Up
A large recessed window allows plenty of natural light into the room, which is tastefully furnished – Hamptons chic! Lauer reportedly purchased the home back in 2009 for just over $2 million, so he’ll be walking away with a tidy profit after selling for just under $4 million.
Stairway
A stairway leads from the main-floor living room to the upstairs, where the home’s three bedrooms can be found.
Cozy Kitchen
The eat-in kitchen is small and basic, with simple cabinets and run-of-the-mill appliances.
Butcher Block
A butcher block tops a peninsula that separates the kitchen from the adjoining dining room/ family room area.
Dining Area
The dining room is, too be frank, underwhelming from a celebrity point of view, but it is not without a certain quaint charm.
View to the Beach
While the dining room might be modest, the spectacular oceanfront view through those windows is anything but. Adjoining the dining area is a small family room which features sliding glass doors that open to the wraparound deck.
Sweeping Views
The Cape Cod-style home features sweeping views of Sag Harbor from the family room that adjoins the dining area.
Master Bedroom
Here’s where Lauer used to lay his head – presumably when he got tired of living in one of his other, grander Hamptons homes.
Second Bedroom
Lauer and his wife have three children, two sons and a daughter. It would make sense that this bedroom, outfitted with two single beds, would be the boys’ room.
Bedroom No. 3
This third bedroom features a large window, and would be the ideal bedroom for Lauer’s daughter.
Modest Bathroom
One of the home’s two bathrooms, surprisingly modest given the wealth of the home’s owner.
Second Bathroom
The home’s other bathroom isn’t too dissimilar from the first, although the wainscoting adds a nice Hamptons-style touch.
Bodacious Backyard
The real selling point of the home? Location, location, location! The large backyard, sitting on a three-quarter-acre lot, backs right onto the water.
Wraparound Deck
The home’s wraparound deck is the real star of this show, spanning the full width of the rear of the house and boasting expansive views of the cove and its numerous boat docks.
Boat Dock
Speaking of boat docks, at the end of the lawn there’s a private dock, with 85 feet of waterfront.
View From the Deck
The home may be modest by celebrity standards, but imagine sitting on the spacious deck taking in a glorious Hamptons sunset.
