I’ve always loved Halloween, and in the Holmes family, it’s a holiday we go all out for. From trick-or-treating with grand kids, to our annual costume party that supports the Holmes Foundation for continued education in the skilled trades, Halloween is perfect opportunity to let loose, have fun and reinvent yourself, even if just for one night. Here’s a look at some of our best Halloween costumes through the years, from all of the Holmes family members.
Mike Holmes is one of HGTV Canada’s go-to contractors and the host of Holmes and Holmes and Holmes: Buy it Right.
Clowning Around
You can’t go wrong with a classic clown costume on Halloween. (Although my interpretation gives a nod to New Year’s Eve, too, with that sparkly hat.)
Yabba, Dabba, Doo!
I trained for months to get these rock hard abs in time for a Flintstones-themed Halloween. Mike Jr. was going to be the Barney to my Fred, but I think my physique scared him off.
My Super Son
Clearly Mike Jr. was jealous of my abs. That was the year he started working out!

Family Fun for a Good Cause
I was so proud to have Mike Jr. (a.k.a. Willy Wonka) and my daughter Amanda (a.k.a. Peter Pan) standing with me at our 2016 Holmes Foundation Halloween party in support of continued education in the skilled trades. It’s a huge passion of ours, and it made perfect sense to time the annual benefit with our favourite holiday!
Two Golden Tickets to the Gun Show
Looks like Willy Wonka flexed so hard at that party that his sleeves fell off!
A Perfect Pair
I was dressed as an old timey bartender for the 2016 Holmes Foundation Halloween party, and was happy to have my best saloon girl at my side.
Best Dressed (Up)
Every year the Holmes team goes all out to compete against family and friends for the best costume. My daughter Sherry Holmes (in the middle) went as a retro pin up girl. She thought she would be a shoe in for the contest but had some serious wig competition from our friend in the pink ’80s dress and blonde bob wig.
Monkey in the Middle
I was missing two of my three kids in this photo, but my monkeys subbed in perfectly!
Pulling Rank on the Job Site
Mike Jr. makes a striking decorated veteran of the job site (but there’s no forgetting who the General is!).
Guess Who?
Does my flowing hair and plaid shirt remind you of anyone? Here’s a hint: he owned 25 properties by the age of 25.
Call Me Mike McGillivray
You guessed it! It’s Scott McGillivray. Don’t tell Scott, but I think my hair is even more voluminous!
Mike isn’t the only HGTV Canada host taking inspiration from his fellow stars, check out Scott McGillivray’s HGTV inspired Halloween costume!
My Little Superheroes
Ultimately, my favourite times are spent with my family, and there’s nothing better than seeing my grandkids dressed up for Halloween. Here they are in their Batman and Iron Man costumes. How cute are they?
