Summer evenings are best enjoyed outdoors. Roasting marshmallows or simply sipping on a beverage by a small fire is such a beautiful way to wind down. Setting up an outdoor firepit at home is quite simple and much easier than you think. You don’t need a big budget or a large space to accomplish this. Follow the six simple steps below.

Step 1: Purchase a Portable Firepit
Portable firepits are a great option for making a fire at home or to take along with you on camping trips or to cottages. I found this option on Amazon that has removable compartments and a carrying case. There are many similar options and most are now smokeless, which makes it much more enjoyable!
Step 2: Choose a Safe Location
Pick a flat, open area away from any structures, trees or flammable materials. Always check local city guidelines or regulations before setting up a firepit at home or while away.
Step 3: Gather Comfy Seating
Once you’ve settled on the location, arrange some comfortable seating and a side table where you can set down food and drink.

Step 4: Set Up the Firepit
Now it’s time for the fire. Read and follow all of the instructions that came with your portable firepit before beginning. Set down the base and ensure the body and frame is secured. The option I chose also came with a fire poker, which is a handy accessory.
Step 5: Make the Fire
Next, fill the firepit with either firewood, charcoal or pellets. This will depend entirely on your preference and use for the fire. Wood provides a more traditional campfire feel, which is great for roasting marshmallows or hot dogs. It also provides maximum heat output. Charcoal is a great option for grilling food and provides consistent heat for cooking. Pellets are a clean and efficient way to create a fire but may not always be compatible with all firepits. So, once again, be sure to read the instructions fully.
Step 6: Prepare Food and Drink
The last step is the most fun step. Make a s’mores board and have a chilled beverage ready to share and enjoy. Get creative with different types of food that you can roast or grill. Many of these portable firepits also offer accessories for outdoor cooking.
Remember to always monitor the fire, never leave it unattended and ensure it’s fully extinguished before leaving the area.
Enjoy your new backyard set-up!
