Spring is here – finally! – which means its time to knock out those cobwebs and give your home a good old-fashioned spring cleaning. It’s may be necessary but it doesn’t have to be all drudgery – just check out these many ways that Reddit users have come up with to inject some fun into their spring cleaning, in ways that are… let’s say unique.
Wear a Fancy Dress
“I just cleaned my entire apartment wearing a formal bridesmaid dress,” writes Reddit user captainburp. “It’s been sitting in my closet for the past couple years and I figured what the hell, maybe it’ll make cleaning funner. And it did. I’d recommend it to anyone that wants to have a fancy fun time while cleaning.”
Housework and Hockey
“NHL hockey games,” declares Reddit user tuutruck. “I swear I clean more during the games than any other time. For example: last night during Hockey Night in Canada, I used my laptop to watch online and I just moved it around as I cleaned.”
Housework in Heels
“You’re supposed to break in heels by wearing them while you vacuum and clean,” explains writes Reddit user corneconomy. “I took that and ran with it; now I clean in heels and vintage lingerie. Look adorable, don’t sweat or stain your cute clothes, and new boyfriend thinks I’m made of magic.”
Liquor
Perhaps the most obvious way to inject some fun into spring cleaning, according to Reddit user Imperativity, is “Liquor. Just kidding. Or am I?”
Podcasts
“I love listening to podcasts for cleaning,” says Reddit user markercore, “that keeps me smiling or laughing or interested to want to keep doing the activity so I can keep listening to whatever episode I’m on.”
Slipper Genie
“If you have wood or tile floors get these!!” recommends Reddit user Paperboy7. “You can scoot around and pretend like you’re ice skating while you clean the floor!!”
Soap and Slide
“When me and my sister had to wash the floors at home, we’d take everything off the floor (rugs, move the tables etc) pour soapy water everywhere, tie rags to our feet and slide on the floor to wash it,” recommends Reddit user LovededYouPiggy. “Eventually, we’d just end up covered in soapy water, bruises and dirt but it was so much fun :).”
Time Yourself
One way the Reddit user dubbed drewchebag tries to make spring clean fun is by breaking out the stopwatch. “Time it. Every time I have to fold laundry, vacuum, unload the dish washer, etc… I’m trying to beat my previous record.”
Make-Believe Assassin
“Pretend you’re an overly cautious hitman who has to clean up the scene of his last job,” suggests Reddit user SortOfLostSoul. “You imagine you’ve just completed your last contract, and now have to remove every possible hint that could point towards you; you’ve got to be completely safe, so you tidy up and clean everything, so nothing is like it was when you did your job.”
Soviet Work Songs
offers this outside-the-box idea that may not be for everyone. “For me it’s old Soviet working songs. Nothing gets the blood pumping more than some old song like, ‘Together we have attained the quota comrades…work is our honour and the honour of our motherland…’ I’ve been broken up with over this behaviour…”
Get Someone Else to Clean
Here’s a solution offered by Reddit user LaLongueCarbine that’s tough to argue with: “Pay someone else to do it while you sit in a lawn chair drinking.”
