You asked, he answered! From how he became a TV host to whether or not Bryan Baeumler is giving him free stays at his new island resort, HGTV Canada star Scott McGillivray answers fan questions from social media.
Host With the Most
How did you become a TV host?
I was ‘discovered’ while doing construction work on one of Debbie Travis’ shows. I was speaking to some people on set about my side job of buying and renovating income properties. Someone thought it was a good idea for a show. The rest is history!
We the North
Where are you located?
Just north of Toronto. Although I travel so much that sometimes it feels like I live in hotels. We also have a vacation property in Florida that we visit as often as possible.

Retirement Ready
Do you think you will retire early?
Absolutely not. I love what I do and I plan to do it for as long as I possibly can.

That is the Question
Move or renovate?
It totally depends on the situation, but more often than not, I vote to renovate.
Flipping Frenzy
What is the number one thing you look for in your first flip? Location or state of the house?
Location. You can change just about anything when it comes to the structure of a house, but you can never change the location.
Hot Market
How do we buy a house in this crazy market?
It’s tough for sure, but there’s always a way. My recommendation is to purchase a home with an income suite. Not only can you rent it out, if you’re having trouble finding money for the purchase, you can take on an investor who can benefit from the rent and any equity being built. Just make sure you have a clear agreement in place.
All About That Scott
When will we have a new series?
I’m filming a brand new show right now! Stay tuned for a premiere date in spring 2020.
Strength in Numbers
Is Home to Win back for another season?
It sure is and we’ve got something very special planed this time. Stay tuned for details.
Colour Trends
What is the latest trend in colour palettes?
For me, neutrals will always rule. They’re better for resale value and quite frankly, I just like them. But I definitely think this year that warmer, chalkier versions of neutrals are on trend. For example, instead of the cool greys we saw a few years ago, we’re seeing warmer greys with a matte finish. That goes for whites, beiges and navies as well.

Go for Green
Why are more homes not being built with solar panels, green roofs, steel frames and grey water?
I think there’s a lack of information and understanding. There are a lot of misconceptions out there and people assume these things are expensive and/or ineffective. I think we all have a responsibility to educate ourselves so that we can make choices that are right for our homes and right for the environment.
Invest for Success
If you were to invest in Ontario in 2019, where would you invest?
There’s a lot of opportunity in Ontario. Right now the Kitchener-Waterloo area is very hot. It’s becoming a big tech hub and the area is growing quickly. I’m also a fan of Prince Edward County. But if you’re going to invest, do it soon. I’m not the only one who thinks it’s a hot spot!
