This year I swear I’m going to keep them all. Probably… Read on for my 2018 New Year’s Resolutions, and please, hold me accountable!
Use My Time More Wisely
One of my biggest issues, and you can confirm this with anyone I work with and my entire family, that I have a tendency to overbook myself. As soon as I find a free minute (and there aren’t many at the moment!) I book a meeting or agree to a media interview. But no more! This year I’m going to try to slow down and be more efficient with my time. I’m going to try and take my brother’s advice and work smarter, not harder.
Travel for Fun
I feel like this is on everyone’s list, but I’d really like to travel more – but not for work! My job keeps me on the go and it’s rare for a week to pass by without me being on at least a couple of flights. And as nice as it is to visit different places, I rarely get a chance to enjoy them. This year I’d like to take some time to travel for fun and really explore the world.
Stop Renovating!
Don’t worry, I’m not going to stop renovating other people’s houses, but I definitely, 100%, MUST stop renovating my own house. After the cameras stopped rolling on MTM I still found more to do, including finishing the pool, the gym, the landscaping, and I even installed solar panels on my roof. My poor family just wants to be able to enjoy their home without construction crews constantly coming through the doors, so I’ve made them a promise that I’ll stick to projects outside the family home.
More Date Nights
I’m the luckiest guy in the world, and have been ever since I met my amazing wife. She’s the sweetest person in the world and she puts up with A LOT. We have a ton of fun when we go out together, and I want to make sure we do it a lot more. When you have two young kids at home it can be tough, but one-on-one dates (ie – no kids) are going to be a lot more frequent in 2018.
Workout More
Like just about every other person on the planet, I resolve to get in better shape and workout more this year. Especially since I’m turning 40 in a few months. Consider this my official declaration of war against the Dad bod!
Rebuild the Garden
One of the toughest things about moving from our old house was saying goodbye to our vegetable garden. We all worked incredibly hard on it and it was one of my favourite ways to spend time with the kids. I was looking forward to getting one started at the new house, but with all the construction last summer it just wasn’t possible. But this year it’s going to happen, and it will be even bigger and better than the last one. Stay tuned for pics!
Cut My Hair
I know, I know, my hair has kind of become a thing. I didn’t mean for it to happen, I just never have time to go out and get it cut. And when I do get it cut, everyone tells me that I should do it a lot more often. So you win. This year I resolve not to go months and months without a haircut. 40-year-old me will be the new, coiffed me.
Find a Better Catchphrase
I’ve been told on more than one occasion that I finish almost every sentence by saying “makes sense?” Honestly, I never noticed. But now that it’s been pointed out to me I’m hyper aware of it and can’t stop saying it. It’s become my unintentional catchphrase. If you watch old episodes of Income Property you’ll notice it too. This year I resolve to eliminate it from my vocabulary and find a new catchphrase. (PS, I’m taking suggestions!)
More Man Dates
I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older and started a family it’s been tougher to find time to get together with my friends. When you work and travel as much as I do it can be tough, and all my friends are in similar situations. This year I’m going to make a much bigger effort to book some nights out with the boys. Being busy is no excuse for letting go of important friendships.
Take Fewer Selfies
Nah, that one’s way too hard.
