True Roots
Pat knew what sort of house he wanted – a familiar Prairie-home style with a mid-century modern twist – for an all-in budget of US $840,000.
Asked and Answered
“When you have your mind set of a very specific style of home, it’s tough to find options,” warned Drew. But he managed to find a 3,900-sq.-ft. fixer upper with the clean lines Pat was partial to.

Blended Family
With its mix of modern accents and home comforts, deciphering Sandy and Pat’s combined personal style was a challenge for Jonathan – but he rose and met it head on.
Meet in the Middle
Originally, Jonathan had a wallpapered feature wall planned for this side of the living room, but Sandy was worried about feeling overwhelmed. These framed wallpaper murals were the solution.
Go With the Flow
Right off the living room is the formal dining room, giving Sandy and Pat the type of free-flowing entertainment spaces they were looking for in their new Music City home.
Home Away from Home
Leaving Wisconsin was especially hard for Sandy but Drew has some sage advice: “Nashville is such an amazing city, so I think once you actually have a home that feels like a home you’re going to love it.”
Island Life
And that’s what happened when Sandy finally saw her finished kitchen after spending US $187K and living through seven weeks of renovations: “Look at that island! It’s exactly what I wanted.”
Singing the Blues
The blue lower cabinets and white uppers create a cool contrast in the massive chef’s kitchen, suiting Pat’s modern tastes but also satisfying Sandy’s vision of a dream kitchen.
Picture Perfect
To Sandy, this room is the most important part of the house: “The heart of the home for me is the kitchen.” To get to its heart, Jonathan took the original kitchen back to its studs and built it back up from scratch.
Set the Table
With the hope of family and friends flying in from Wisconsin for visits, the kitchen has a lot of hosting in its future. “It’s perfect,” says Sandy. “You can’t even imagine, when everyone’s around here it’s going to feel like the perfect size.”
Major Transformations
The kitchen’s original aesthetic (before Jonathan got his hands on it) was likened to a sterile “dentist’s office”. Now the space is warm and inviting…without a single florescent light in sight.
Extra, Extra
Lots of little extras can be found in this fully kitted-out kitchen, from the apron sink and pot filler to the steam over and double fridge.
Cin, Cin
With Pat’s reaction to his new home, it’s definitely time for a toast. “There’s this modern home in the style that we like, and we come inside and it’s like a new version of that. It’s overwhelming!”
Man Cave
Another important must-have in Sandy and Pat’s home was a separate sub-master bedroom for Sandy’s aging father, Charlie, who moved with them from Wisconsin.
Multipurpose Room
In order to get enough square footage to give Charlie his own space, Jonathan converted an office and powder room into a private, comfortable suite.
On the Move
The ensuite bathroom needed special attention as Charlie has some mobility issues, making the entrance extra wide and installing multiple of hand railings throughout.
Own Two Feet
A handheld shower wand and fold-down seat in the ensuite will help Charlie keep his independence for longer, which was always the goal for Pat and Sandy.
Take Root
As a fun, home-coming surprise for Sandy, their sons Aaron and Austin selected native-to-Tennessee shrubs that decorate the expansive solarium off the side of the kitchen.
High Fives All Around
“Sandy let this house be a lot about me, so I’ve been very nervous as we bumped through this,” says Pat. “So, to see her be so happy at how it’s come out, I literally can’t explain how good it makes me feel.”
