In a recent interview with Business Insider, IKEA’s design manager, Marcus Engman, shared his favourite IKEA product of all-time. To the shock and bewilderment of design editors everywhere, it wasn’t the perky DOCKSTA table, or the discontinued (but much beloved) EDLAND bed. No, it was the KLIPPAN love seat, a boxy, inexpensive love seat that Engman’s father, Lars, designed for the company in the late 1970s.
The popularity of the KLIPPAN doesn’t end with it’s budget friendly price tag. Its compact shape makes it easy to move, and fit in ever-shrinking condos. And it’s continually released in new and creative colour combinations.
For Engman, who joined IKEA at the young age of 16, the love seat carries a sentimental value. He recalls memories of his father bringing home models during the love seat’s development. “I remember when he brought it home for tests, and he asked me and my sister what we thought of it,” Engman told Business Insider. “I have a lot of fond memories with that sofa, and I’m glad that it has survived for so long.”
