When it comes to home decor, white can be a universal canvas. But it can also be a tricky colour to work with: not enough variety in the different shades and your space can become washed out. Too many shades and suddenly one looks dirtier than the other. Thankfully in the right hands, white can be a brilliant colour that brightens up a space and makes it feel larger, contemporary and sleek. Those were all things Jillian Harris was going for on a recent episode of Love It Or List It Vancouver, when she transformed a home into an accessible haven for one lucky couple. By Amber Dowling

White Bricks
To be fair, Jillian didn’t exactly pick the soft-hued bricks hugging this pretty bungalow, but she certainly drew inspiration from them. Paired with a soft grey roof the exterior helps this house looks inviting and modern.
White Garage
Complimentary off-white garage doors and siding complete the exterior look, while the ramp Jillian had built is up-to-code, safe, and impressively sleek nestled up against the side.
Interior Bricks
We love brick walls, but this soft brick finish is especially pretty when paired with a white couch. The grey undertones help to warm the space up, while black accents cool it down and give it that modern feel.
Surface Area
Sleek hardwood and a lighter coloured coffee table compliment the wall and couch, while this gorgeous area rug ties all the components together and really finishes off the whole space.
Marvellous Marble
On the opposing wall Jillian opted to bring out the fireplace with a marble finish that really updates the space and fits the overall flow of the room.
Mix and Match
Since the couch is white, Jillian opted to pull some of the grey bits from the brick wall out courtesy of this soft grey armchair. The white throw pillows bring it all together with a finishing touch.
A Gleaming Kitchen
The white trend continues in the kitchen, which is also finished with a softer-coloured hardwood floor that helps keep the flow from room to room. Meanwhile the bright cupboards work to open up the space and give the illusion of even more light.
Pretty Backsplash
In order to maximize the window space, Jillian decided not to bulk up the sink area with more cupboards, but extended this pretty subway tile backsplash all the way to the ceiling for a unique, polished look.
White Space
This beautiful, customized table is not only perfect for entertaining and storage, but it fits in with the overall colour scheme. Then, Jillian added these modular black chairs for a little pop and contrast that livens the area up.
White Trim
The trim is a shade brighter than the cream-finished cupboards, which helps give a little more depth and definition to the kitchen while still brightening up the overall room.
Working in White
Lastly, Jillian integrated this functional workspace into the kitchen in the same lighter hue as the trim. It’s a colour that helps reflect all of the natural light coming in from the brilliantly placed window, and serves as the perfect finishing touch to the whole white and bright concept.
