Proving yet again that no one knows wallpaper like she does, interior designer Jacquelyn Clark transformed a cookie cutter condo into a welcoming contemporary retreat, all thanks to a statement wall that’ll leave you speechless.

Jacquelyn’s client was using this one-bedroom condo as a pied-a-terre for her frequent visits to Toronto (she lives primarily in Israel with her husband and two children). The condo was in fine working order, but it lacked personality and never quite felt like home. With a few statement pieces already purchased (like the couch, rug and dining table), Jacquelyn set to work filling in the details, and layering in pieces that would bring the home to life, and reflect the taste and style of her client.
Jacquelyn spotted the unique and dramatic black and white malachite wallpaper early on in the planning process, and it became the catalyst for the entire look and feel of the space. “It just embodied my client so perfectly that I knew it needed to act as our jumping off point. From there, I really got to work on playing up the modern meets cozy vibe my client was after.”
After selecting the statement wallpaper for the living room, Jacquelyn carefully selected printed pillows for the basic grey couch. She sourced options that would match the wallpaper’s contemporary design without competing with it. All pillows in the living room were custom made with Tonic Living. The colour story is consistent throughout the entire condo, which helps to extend the sense of space, and allows each room to flow into the next. With light grey and white as the base for the palette, blue and black accents were layered in sparingly. The blue Elte rug was already in place before Jacquelyn began designing, so she kept all other textiles in the living room either grey or white.
Jacquelyn’s client already owned the dining table and sputnik inspired chandelier, but she’d paired them with clunky dining chairs that didn’t fit the scale of the space. Jacquelyn replaced them with Restoration Hardware chairs inspired by Marcel Breuer’s iconic 1928 Cesca Chair. They infuse the space with a touch of vintage, emphasized by the existing Elte light.
Jacquelyn wove a touch of blue into the dining area with a polka dot print, that also served to lighten the mood of the contemporary corner.
The bedroom is directly off the living room, through a large sliding door. It was important to ensure the spaces spoke to one another, so the bedroom wouldn’t appear disjointed when the door was left open.
The bedroom received a full makeover, with a new bed, side tables and light fixture from Elte, a quilt from Restoration Hardware, and artwork from The Door Store.
The kitchen is essentially a hallway right off the foyer, so it’s the first thing you see when you enter the condo. Jacquelyn had to ensure it held its own as a distinct “room” in the home, while still appearing as one with the rest of the space.
“We kept the existing kitchen cabinet boxes, removed the built in fridge (which made the space feel cavernous), and painted the existing cabinets.” Jacquelyn explained. “We made sure to keep the colour palette simple and serene, splurged on a dreamy, conversation-worthy fridge, and infused texture and interest with the use of a stunning stone backsplash. A new caesarstone countertop, a modern faucet, and gorgeous cabinet hardware was enough to really breathe new life into the small but newly-mighty space.”
The final “room” in the condo, was the foyer, which was composed of a single wall, with a closet across from it. While small in size, the foyer offered the perfect opportunity to play with a bold pattern. Jacquelyn selected a modern floral wallpaper, that introduces the colour palette of the condo. A simple telephone table was placed in front of the wallpaper, and was topped with an elegant lamp and a young Jade.
