Check into one of these extraordinary hotels if you demand more than a so-so guest room and an old clunker of an ice machine down the hall. From a swanky apartment-turned-hotel in Saskatoon to a sumptuous nature-inspired space in Vancouver, these design-forward buildings can’t be replicated.
The Douglas: Vancouver
A 25-foot replica Douglas fir tree-encased concierge desk makes for a dramatic greeting in this hotel. The Douglas, an Autograph Collection Hotel, located within Parq Vancouver, is a balanced dialogue of nature and city that’s a must-see for fashionistas.
The Douglas: Vancouver
No, this sumptuous space isn’t part of the lounge; it’s actually The Den, one of the luxury suites inside The Douglas, if you can believe it. (Excuse us, while we sink into that magnificent semi-circle sofa.)
Hotel Arts: Calgary
Hunker down in the heart of Calgary’s art and entertainment scene in this style-driven boutique property. An extensive curated art collection offers lots to soak in. The splashy studio rooms were unveiled last month. How cool is that colourful film? The custom print by designer Farmboy encloses the toilet and shower. (The vanity is located outside the glass area.)
Crash Hotel: Edmonton
Yes, those are luggage tops on the wall, and if you don’t like it, you can bed down for the night in a room with a gigantic octopus, or maybe an illustration of an anatomically correct brain is more your thing. If you haven’t guessed, this is an anti-average, urban traveller’s hotel. Let loose in the quirky, retro cocktail bar, too, why don’t you.
Broadview Hotel: Toronto
Brass and burgundy commingle in this exciting transformation by the DesignAgency. This corner room, which cheekily references the hotel’s previous life as the infamous Jilly’s strip bar (the brass pole functions as a design piece and shelf), feels like your cool interior designer friend’s apartment.
Broadview Hotel: Toronto
The eye-candy continues in the hotel’s cafe and bar, that is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. That blue is perfection against the sinewy bar, and those hanging plants are everything.
The June Motel: Picton, ON
Gal pals April Brown and Sarah Sklash transformed a nothing-special motel into a darling polished throwback, and the cool kids couldn’t be happier. Pastels pervade, especially pink, in this 16-bedroom motel in Ontario’s Prince Edward County, where neon signs, palm-leaf wallpaper and Solair chairs are the work of Keri MacLellan of Four Walls Interiors. Reason enough to explore Picton, for sure, and it helps that the area is a stellar wine region.
The June Motel: Picton, ON
The lobby has a sign that reads Peace, Love, Wine. Don’t mind if we do, thanks.
Drake Devonshire: Wellington, ON
The charmingly swank Drake Devonshire is located in the historic town of Wellington in Ontario’s Prince Edward County. Infused with idiosyncratic flourishes, from the public areas to the guest rooms (there’s always a revolving art installation somewhere), this tongtong-designed lodging is a must-see if you’re hitting the road this summer. Oh, those lakeside views!
Le Germain Hotel: Ottawa
Opened in May 2018, this Le Germain hotel in the nation’s capital is the work of the design firm Lemay Michaud Architecture. Timeless yet stylish, the guest rooms feature superimposed
photographs of the city of Ottawa printed on felt by the artist Julie Couture. Other elements that make the room sing: natural wood, suede and recycled fur.
Hotel Monville: Montreal
A tres chic interior and tres cool techie features factor into this 269-room hotel in Montreal’s Quartier International neighbourhood. The design-forward building by ACDF Architecture has smart-car charging stations, robotic room service and electronic check-in options. But back to that futuristic robot for a second: Can you imagine Mister R2-D2 showing up with your eggs? (Reason enough to book a holiday here for sure.)
Hotel Monville: Montreal
Tech features aside, Hotel Monville is dripping with style. Check out the airy lobby resto-bar with its glamorous brass bucket stools. The artwork is by renowned photographer Valérie Jodoin Keaton and the staff uniforms are by local, loved-by-millennials clothier Frank and Oak.
Manoir Hovey: North Hatley, QC
How suite it is! Imagine stretching out under that striped canopy to snooze the afternoon away? The breeze flows in and you haven’t got a care in the world. This romantic cottage room on the lake is a Relais & Châteaux summer estate that has been in existence since the 1900s. The “national treasure,” as it’s touted, has gorgeous gardens, a lovely restaurant and the personal attention from the innkeepers (a couple) who have owned Manoir Hovey since the ’70s.
Fogo Island Inn: Fogo Island, NL
Unfussy furnishings ensures the seaside views star in this sublime cutting-edge hotel. We love the colourful doses in the 29 tranquil guest rooms, from the chaise to the coverlet and the wallpaper. Designed by the architect Todd Saunders, the hotel has striking structure and breathtaking grounds. #BucketListGoals
