Ashley and Tyler wanted to start saving for their retirement, so they bought the house next door to turn into a rental suite. 72 hours later, when they finally went inside, they discovered that every single inch of the house was a complete disaster. It took every bit of Scott McGillivray’s expertise to resurrect this condemned house from the dead. By Alexa Keeler and Rebecca Burstein

In For It
What he didn’t know was that this renovation job would be so horrific it would go down in Income Property history.
Safety First
Scott and the homeowners had to wear protective safety gear just to walk around in this house.
Unpleasant Surprises
It was one of the worst places Scott had ever seen!
Barely Salvageable
Not only were there structural issues stemming from crooked studs, even the tiniest details were just all wrong, from wallpaper on the bathtub and duct tape on the walls to urine soaked flooring and a rat infestation.
Heebie Jeebies
The homeowners were especially disgusted and appalled because their own home rests just on the other side of the dividing wall!
R.I.P.?
Scott declared that the place was inches away from being condemned. They would have to rip the house down to the bare walls and start over if the homeowners wanted to give it a shot.
Does He Have the Guts?
Scott knew he had one of his biggest gut jobs ahead of him.
The Old Entrance
When Scott first walked into the property with the homeowners, they were hesitant to proceed through the rest of the house for a while because of what they saw.
The New Entrance
Every little detail, down to the front door, was gutted and replaced. Even the front deck was redone.
The Old Dining Room
Because the house is so narrow, it was hard for the homeowners to imagine having a kitchen, living room and dining room on the same floor.
New Dining Room
Scott made great use of the small space, and it didn’t feel cramped at all.

The New Kitchen
This space is utterly unrecognizable after Scott is finished with it. After some long, arduous work, Scott was able to replace the plumbing and add a wide peninsula and a dishwasher. With plenty of modern, elegant lighting and all the right finishing touches, you would never know this place was once a death trap.
The Main Floor
The main floor went from looking like this dump…
Revamped First Floor
…to a modern masterpiece! Any young, hip couple or small family would be thrilled to rent the unit now.
Old Bathroom
Remember this dump with the wallpapered bathtub?
