A Stuffed Buffalo
A Reddit user with the handle Sneakycerealbox described seeing “An enormous stuffed buffalo in the living room” of a an acquaintance’s home. “His name was Harvey and he was the guy’s most beloved pet before he died. Totally normal.”
The Grim Reaper
A social worker with the Reddit handle of Slo125 writes about encountering a creepy sight in a home she visited. “As a social worker I go into a lot of homes. One of the first homes I went into I was with my supervisor at the time. It was a home out in the country and the concerns were basically that this kid came to school dirty a lot. We go into the home and yeah, it was a bit dirty, but nothing really alarming. Except for the HUGE STATUE OF THE F****** GRIM REAPER IN THE LIVING ROOM. Like this thing was at least 4 feet tall. And it was surrounded by candles. My supervisor could not stop staring. It was weird.”
Urinal… in the Living Room
Reddit user TylerTimoj writes of his surprise at entering the living room of a home and seeing a urinal mounted on the wall. “The guy’s wife had died, so it was just him and his son,” he explains. “Pretty convenient I guess, but really weird. They tried to sell their house, but it wouldn’t sell until they converted the urinal into a drinking fountain. I wonder why?”
Dead Grandpa
Reddit user Badm0t0rf1nger was an exchange student who was pretty much traumatized after visiting the home of a Filipino family and discovered the family kept their long-deceased grandfather in the living room. “They had a lovely house in a nice side of town and I remember on the ride to their house they said to not mind grandpa as he was always in the living room,” writes the Redditor. “They did not however explain to me that Grandpa had been dead some 15 years by the time I visited. While most of the adults thought this was completely normal, the siblings of the student I exchanged with explained that it was tradition and that some people even claimed they weren’t dead, just sick. They said it was a tradition they had no intention of continuing.”
After other Reddit users demanded some clarification, Badm0t0rf1nger added: “OK, so perhaps I should elaborate. The body wasn’t just decomposing on the sofa or something like that. When their grandfather died, he was taken to a mortician and they did the preservation process and the body was released back to the family, the family partly due to tradition and partly due to actual financial considerations decided not to bury him just yet as they did not have the money for a proper burial. Burials and funerals are a super big deal there, and the family of the deceased are expected to put on a huge party if you will. Needless to say that is quite expensive. So they kind of built a shrine for him in the living room while they waited to save up for the funeral. The casket had a lexan top so you could see the body and he was very much dead, but it didn’t look like a corpse just rotting away… I think they had just become so used to it that they just left him there.”
Human Skull
Reddit user Rickscarf describes something weird he realized about his own home. “We had a human skull in a glass case in our living room growing up, it was years before I figured out that was really weird. My mom got it from a doctor friend or something, just some random head, not like a relative or anything. We called him Freddy and had to superglue his jaw back on every few years when it fell off. I guess I had repressed the memories but just typing this now I recall touching it and playfully tossing it around gently at times.”
Grandfather Clocks
Another Reddit user writes: “I went to a friend’s house and they had their halls lined with grandfather clocks. This was a little weird but nothing major. The weird part came when his dad told me and my friend, ‘Don’t you kids go around telling anybody about my clocks.’ Now I’ll never forget about his precious clocks.”
GI Joe Aircraft Carrier
A Reddit user with the handle Brooklynbotz reveals, “I had a friend in high school whose family used a GI Joe aircraft carrier as a coffee table.”
White Carpet… in the kitchen
Reddit user Pomjuice recalls the shock of being in someone else’s home and encountering “a white carpeted kitchen.” As one commenter adds, “Someone likes to flirt with danger.”
Stripper Pole — and…
“My mom had a friend that lived up the road that was an ex pole dancer that gave pole dancing lessons. She lived in a nice double wide trailer with a really nice room with stage, two poles, lights, fogger, full bar. It was a nice set up,” writes Reddit user Whabbitybam. “That’s not the part that was weird. You know those Christmas towns they sell at Hallmark or whatever? She had a huge Halloween one set up. A dozen little haunted houses and a hundred little creepy figurines. In the middle of summer. And it was very well done. She was very proud of the tiny figure of Dracula bathing in blood. It was cool but odd. She was a like a grandma showing off her little collection.”
Freshly Baked Bread
Reddit user whosthedoginthisscen wrote, “I came here to mention the friends who kept their bread in the oven, but clearly I’m out of my league.”
Money May Not Grown on Trees, But…
File this under: Houses we wish we grew up in…Reddit user dangling-pointer shared this amazing story from their childhood, “I was visiting a friend one time and we were about to go buy a 30-rack at the nearby liquor store. I tell him we need to stop by an ATM so I can pick up some cash to pay. He just turns and looks at me and goes, “Don’t worry about it, we can just go to the money drawer”. This kid’s family literally kept a drawer full of $20 bills in the kitchen that you could just walk up to and grab whenever you needed something. It was pretty surreal.”
Fancy That
“Went to a party in college and the kid living there had BOXES of Cat Fancy magazine catalogued by month and year all over his room. When I asked about it, the dude just shrugged and said, “I’m into cats.” I was too nervous to ask more.”
Double Dipping
Reddit user Eoiny shared this icky story, “Once when I was a kid I was invited to stay over for dinner at a friend’s house. My friend’s mother poured a large quantity of ketchup into a cereal bowl, which the entire family all casually dipped their fingers into and licked throughout the meal.”
Bathroom Buddy
Reddit user possiblyme shared this shocker, “My brother dated a girl whose mother kept a pet tortoise in the bathroom. He had no idea until he went to use the bathroom and what he thought was a stone statue started walking towards him.”
