A little over a year ago, Ashley lost her husband suddenly in a tragic car accident, leaving her alone with their three young kids. Since then, the mother has been her family’s rock, doing everything and anything for her children. This obviously left little time to think about design, so Ashley’s sisters called in Cheryl Torrenueva, Roger Morin and the Reno Set Go team to help surprise their sis with a brand new living and dining room. Here’s a look at the kid-friendly redesign that’s full of adult appeal.
New Family Space
In order to maximize space and get the most out of this living room, Cheryl added two opposing couches that add tons of seating. An oversized storage unit surrounding the television anchors the look and makes it feel like a cozy little room where the whole family can hang out.
Mismatched Decor
Although both couches match, Cheryl took care to decorate them with different textiles in order to add character and individuality. Now the sofas draw the eye and play with neutral colours, rather than coming across as too uniform and rigid.
Multiple Functions
This ottoman serves as many things – a bonus area for storage thanks to the cubby underneath, a coffee table and extra seating for guests. It’s also family friendly and safe thanks to the plush material, while the blue adds even more rich colour to the space.
Colourful Finishes
Below, a patterned area rug in a variety of pink, blue and maroon hues helps tie in some of the furniture, adding definition and layers of interest. Pretty pink lilies set in a gold wire basket complete the look.
Added Warmth
This instant fireplace helps add even more comfort to the living room and lets off bonus heat during the colder winter months. Its simple design is built right into the actual storage units surrounding the television, helping it to blend in while still making a statement.
Custom Shelves
These bookshelves make a stylish statement thanks to the gorgeous floral wallpaper. Cheryl also incorporated tons of family photos to fill the space with love and fond memories.
Modern Seating
On this side of the living room, Cheryl added two industrial-style chairs in a fun pink shade and cozied them up with faux fur seat cushions.
Total Separation
A sofa or wall table is always another brilliant way to help add definition to separate spaces within an open-concept design. Cheryl proved that yet again with this curved model that adds extra storage and display opportunities.
Safe Transitions
Before the redesign, this flooring transition was completely elevated and caused everyone who went over it to trip. Afterwards, thanks to a little creativity from Roger, the area between the kitchen and living room became a much smoother place.
New Dining Room
This custom table is perfect for Ashley, her three kids and all of her extended family. The tabletop’s dark stain showcases the natural grooves of the wood while also adding a dramatic effect. The mounted wall cushion is a clever addition that offers extra back support, and its soft pink hue helps connect this area to the living room.
Personal Touches
This chalkboard installation is perfect for family messages, meal prep and more. Cheryl got creative and included a star installation to remind the kids of their father. The nearby family portrait adds even more meaning to the space.
Crafty Spaces
On the other side of the dining area, Cheryl and Roger crafted this awesome little craft bench with plenty of storage for all of the kids’ art supplies. Custom stools inscribed with each of their initials is a playful detail, while a chalkboard wall allows the kids to maximize their creativity.
Storage Galore
Cheryl took one last opportunity to incorporate as much storage as possible, adding a few baskets and vases above the craft nook. Storage, functionality and enviable design? Ashley’s sisters, Cheryl and Roger definitely pulled off this epic surprise, hopefully making the single mom’s life a little easier.
